Motorcyclist Death
(Lincoln) – A 50-year old motorcyclist from Howland died when his bike hit a car pulling onto Route 2 in Lincoln. The Bangor Daily News reports Jeffrey Luddon was headed toward Enfield Saturday afternoon when the woman pulled out of Drinkwater’s Variety. Luddon struck the car on the driver’s side. Police closed the road to reconstruct the crash.
Shooting Justified
(Augusta) – A State Trooper who fired shots at a mid-coast man last summer was justified in returning fire. That’s the conclusion of Maine’s Attorney General. In a report released to Star 97.7, the AG’s office says State Police Sergeant Jason Madore fired at 34-year old Shane Prior after pulling him over in Cushing. The stop followed an incident in which Prior had wounded an ex-girlfriend. All of Madore’s shots missed. Prior had shot himself in the head when Sergeant Madore saw the muzzle flash and heard a bullet whiz by. Prior died from the self-inflicted wound.
Gun Charges
(Bangor) – A 39-year old Milford man faces up to 10-years in federal prison and a quarter million dollar fine after pleading guilty to firearms charges. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97.7 Travis Stinson and another man broke into a Bangor Pawn Shop, smashed a window and stole guns to pay for drugs. Stinson had a felony conviction in Kentucky and is barred from having guns. He will receive his sentence later.
Caterpillar Hill
(Sedgwick) – Another effort is under way to preserve the spectacular view on Caterpillar Hill in Sedgwick against development. The Ellsworth American reports Blue Hill Heritage Trust plans to start raising funds to come up with the more than $600-thousand dollars to purchase the 32-acres. They’re working with two other land trusts and will submit an application to the Land for Maine’s Future board for consideration. The groups have until September 2018 to come up with the funds.
Owl’s Head Museum – Card
(Owl’s Head) – The former executive director of the Owl’s Head Transportation museum allegedly used the organization’s credit card to purchase personal items. Village Soup dot-com reports museum officials confirmed that Russ Rocknack used the card for nearly $30-thousand dollars worth of personal items. Rocknack resigned last October and reportedly has paid back the money. He took over as museum director in 2013.
Cherryfield Homicide UPDATE
(Cherryfield) – Still no suspects as police continue to investigate a 55-year old woman’s death. A passing motorist spotted Sally Shaw’s body alongside Route 193 in Cherryfield last week. Her rental car turned up about 15-miles away in the overnight hours – it was involved in an accident. Shaw was a traveling nurse. While police know how she died, they’re not saying anything publicly yet other than they’ve classified the case as a homicide.
DSF Fundraising Launch
(E. Machias) The Downeast Salmon Federation readies to launch its $2-point-2-million-dollar capital campaign. Development coordinator Heather Andrews says that money will help fund the project for the next 6 years. Andrews says the community-wide effort takes hundreds of volunteers, lots of them schools students who help with fin clipping in the fall before the parr are released into rivers Downeast. The official launch celebration is August 3rd at the Federation’s newly expanded Peter Gray Hatchery on Willow Street in East Machias.
Affordable Housing
(Ellsworth) – A developer says he’s on target to begin construction on a 50-unit affordable housing project in Ellsworth. Kevin Bunker of Developers Collaborative tells Star 97.7 he expects to begin construction on the 8-to-10 buildings behind the Ellsworth Shopping Center by September First. The Ellsworth Planning Board has issued the necessary permits to allow the construction.
New Restaurant
(Ellsworth) – A new restaurant is in the works for Ellsworth, but no one is saying what it’s going to be. The owners of the Maine Coast Mall have submitted an application to the Code Enforcement Officer who confirms to Star 97.7 the restaurant will be less than 5-thousand square feet and located near the current McDonald’s. The permit does not need Planning Board approval. Code Enforcement Officer Dwight Tilton says construction is slated to start August 1st, but the city has not yet reviewed any permits.
Stabbing-Surrender
(Baileyville) A Baileyville man turned himself in to police after stabbing another man Thursday night. Police responded to the scene before 10 o’clock to find the 19-year-old victim with two stab wounds in the back. The victim was treated at the hospital and released. WABI-TV reports 20-year-old Timothy Worster turned himself in and is charged with Elevated Aggravated Assault. More charges are possible.
Attempted Murder
(Fairfield) A Fairfield man indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury for trying to kill his girlfriend. Police say 36-year-old Jeremy Clement went to an Oakfield home in April intending to kill the woman. WABI-TV reports she and her mother fought Clement with a baseball bat but his girlfriend was shot in the chest during the struggle. The victim survived. Police used a stun gun to subdue Clement. He’s charged with attempted murder, burglary, and elevated aggravated assault among other charges.
Sports
- The Red Sox lost to the Angels 3-to-2 yesterday – Rick Porcello gave up 3-solo home runs. Eduardo Rodriguez will start tonight for the Sox against the Seattle Mariners.
- The Sox have called up 3rd baseman Rafael Devers who started the season with Portland. He’ll play tomorrow in Seattle.
- Bangor wins the American Legion Zone 1 baseball tournament and a trip to the state tourney this week.
- Jordan Speith won the British Open after a spectacular finish on the final 5-holes.
- Chris Froome wins his 4th Tour de France
- Casey Kahne wins the NASCAR Brickyard 400 yesterday.
