Cherryfield Death
(Cherryfield) – State police have classified a Washington County death as a homicide but have few answers they’re revealing at this point. Spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 a passing motorist discovered the body along side Route 193 in Cherryfield around 5:30 yesterday morning. Police have seized a black Chevy Impala found about 15-miles up the road at the intersection with Route 9, saying the car has connections to the woman. An autopsy today should reveal how she died and a positive identification.
Guilty Plea
(Rockland) – An Aroostook County man who went on a crime rampage in 2015, killing two people and wounding three others has entered a guilty plea to murder, attempted murder and other charges. 37-year old Anthony Lord of Crystal appeared in a Rockland courtroom yesterday to change his plea. There was no plea deal in the case; Lord’s attorney Jeff Toothaker of Ellsworth said he pled guilty because it was morally right. Lord admitted killing 22-year old Kyle Hewitt of Benedicta and 58-year old Kevin Tozier of Lee, and wounding three others in Benedicta. He also set fire to a barn, stole guns, and tied a woman to a chair after beating her.
County Treasurer Sues
(Ellsworth) – The elected County Treasurer in Hancock County is suing the County Commissioners for not compensating her for health insurance. The Ellsworth American reports Janice Eldridge seeks back compensation when opted not to receive health insurance benefits through the county as she was covered by Medicare. The county offers a buy back for employees who opt for different plans other than those offered by the county. The case was moved to federal court.
PSAP Move
(Ellsworth) – Commissioners in Hancock County have found little to no public support for a plan to pay Penobscot County to answer the 9-1-1 phone lines instead of the current dispatch crew at the Hancock County Regional Communications Center. The County Commissioners make their decision next Tuesday. Commissioner Antonio Blasi tells Star 97-7 he will not support the proposal. County officials floated the idea due to staffing and space shortages in Hancock County.
Motorcycle Crash-Flee
(SW Harbor) Police on MDI have yet to catch up with a motorcycle driver who hit speeds possibly in excess of 100 miles per hour. Chief Alan Brown reports to Star 97-7 they got a heads-up call from Mt Desert police before 8 Wednesday morning that the motorcycle was headed toward Southwest Harbor. An officer spotted the bike in traffic on Main Street and attempted to pull it over. The bike sped off and the officer didn’t pursue it for public safety concerns. Later the officer found the motorcycle veered off the road into the woods at Manset Corner but no sign of the driver. The investigation is on-going.
E-Waste Collection
(Ellsworth) You can safely dispose old computers, TVs, game consoles, and cell phones during the Ellsworth Noontime Rotary Club’s E-Waste Collection. Treasurer Jennifer Saunders says bring your unwanted electronics to the Home Depot parking lot between 7AM and Noon on Saturday. The disposal fee is by donation.
Break-in Arrests
(Phillips) Deputies arrested two Farmington residents in connection with a break-in at a home in Phillips. The Franklin County Sheriff tells WABI-TV that 21-year-old Brandy Pease and 26-year-old Shawn Burnell allegedly broke into a Dodge Road home and stole video games, a TV, laptop, sound system, and drug paraphernalia. The suspects were interviewed Tuesday before their arrests. Police say all items were returned except those used for drugs.
Jordan‘s to Reopen
(Ellsworth) – Jordan’s Snack Bar in Ellsworth will reopen sometime in August now that it officially has a new owner. Scott and Katie Kenny closed the deal on the property yesterday. Kenny tells the Ellsworth American he’ll start hiring a new staff and shoot for opening in mid to late August. Jordan’s abruptly closed after a key staff member died in March. Kenny says he plans to keep the same menu at the popular take out.
Downtown Business
(Ellsworth) Today’s the soft opening for a new bar and grill in downtown Ellsworth. HotShotz opens at 11AM at 193 Main Street in the former Mainely Meat on Main Street building. The Ellsworth American reports owner Mike DeBeck and manager Chris Seavey have bigger plans for the restaurant than just subs, cheeseburgers, chicken fingers and lasagna. An internet-connected jukebox allows customers to download an app on their phones to control the music. Two pool tables are set up. And live entertainment like karaoke and open-mic nights are in the works for later this year.
Job Cuts
(Jay) A central Maine paper mill says declining customer demand has led to the upcoming closure of a paper machine. The Sun Journal reports that Verso Corp. will permanently close its number 3 paper machine by Aug. 1 at its Androscoggin Mill. The company in January laid off 190 employees when it idled the machine and related equipment.
Sports
Red Sox 5 Toronto Blue Jays 1 (Drew Pomerantz got his 10th win of the season. Tonight, Doug Fister looks for his first win as a Red Sox as he takes on the Jays). The Sox gain a game in their American League East win as both the Yankees and Rays lose.
American Legion playoffs start tonight at Husson University. The Trenton Acadians did not make the post season.
