Drug Sentence
(Bangor) – A federal judge has sent a 34-year old Dixmont man to prison for a year and a half. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97-7 that Adam Hamilton brought oxycodone tablets to Maine from Waterbury Connecticut between June 2013 and April 2015, selling them for $30-dollars apiece. After he gets out of prison, Hamilton will spend 3-years on supervised release.
Ice Arena Access
(Ellsworth) – A planned arena in Ellsworth got a small boost forward from city councilors this week. The Ellsworth American reports the proposed $11-million dollar arena won access over city owned land to property behind Ellsworth High School. The arena would feature an ice rink, and is currently trying to raise private funds to move ahead with the arena. The city council directed officials to get the paper work in order to access the land parcel from the new entrance to Ellsworth High School.
Bank Robbery – Arrest
(Newcastle) – A Newcastle man sits in a Wiscasset jail after police found cash and other items associated with a bank robbery in his Route 1 home. Village Soup dot-com reports 46-year old Carroll Demmons is charged with felony burglar and theft and likely faces other charges after his arrest yesterday. Monday a man wearing a nylon stocking over his head demanded money from a bank teller at Camden National Bank in Waldoboro and escaped on foot. Police searched Demmons home yesterday and arrested him. More than 5-years ago workers locked the door and called police when they noticed him emerging from the woods wearing a ski mask and other identity concealing clothes and approaching the bank.
Yogurt Embezzle
(Belfast) – Grand jurors say there is enough evidence to proceed with theft charges against a former manager at a frozen yogurt business in Belfast. The Pen Bay Pilot reports 39-year old Kari Drake is accused of stealing cash deposits from the Belmont Avenue business between July and December last year. Drake gave varying accounts to company officials and police investigators, once claiming the deposits were burned up in a small fire at her home. Prosecutors say she allegedly stole more than $14-thousand dollars.
Sentence Upheld
(Augusta) – A 39-year old Augusta man who raped two young boys will remain in prison until at least 2047. The Maine Supreme Court upheld the 60-year sentence against Wade Hoover. Prosecutors say Hoover videotaped his attack on the two youngsters and found the images on his computer. The children were unconscious during the rapes. He contested the long sentence, but the high court justices disagreed that the prison term was unreasonable.
Poetry Contest
(Belfast) The deadline is nearing to enter the Maine Postmark Poetry Contest. Maine residents, even those who summer here, are eligible to enter the statewide contest. You may submit one poem up to 2 pages in length. The Belfast Poetry Festival Committee will review the entries and approve 10 finalists to be judged by Minneapolis poet Katharine Rauk [Rock]. She’ll select first, second and third place winners with the top prize being $100-cash and publication in The Maine Review. Standoff Ends
(Lincoln) – A standoff that lasted 22-hours in Lincoln ended yesterday without injury. Police fired tear gas into the house where William Bradbury had barricaded himself and he eventually surrendered. Officers had tried to arrest Bradbury Monday on sex assault charges, and that’s when the standoff began. It ended about 11-o’clock yesterday morning. In addition to the sex charges, Bradbury is now accused of creating a police standoff.
Car in Water
(Steuben) – A 43-year old man faces charges after his car went off Route 1 in Steuben yesterday morning and ended up in a stream. State Police say Harold Pottle the 2nd swerved around two cars that had stopped in front of him, went down an embankment and into the stream. Another motorist was able to pull Pottle out of the vehicle. He’s charged with driving to endanger.
