Brewer Bar Fire
(Brewer) – A bar in Brewer sits in ruins this morning after fire tore through the South Main Street building overnight. Firefighters got the page to head to Cap’s Tavern at about 11-o’clock last night. Several departments responded to help pour water onto the burning building – everyone got out safely; the bar had closed about an hour earlier. The fire marshal’s office will investigate the cause.
Deer Isle – Town Manager
(Deer Isle) – Not a huge amount of interest in the town manager’s job in Deer Isle as only 7-people apply for the post. The Ellsworth American reports the candidates come from as near as Blue Hill and as far as Texas. A committee will interview the applicants, and if they select someone, the position will not start until next spring, provided voters fund the position.
Motorist Flees
(St. George) – A Tenant’s Harbor man faces charges after he ran off following a car crash. Village Soup dot-com reports 46-year old John Melquist Jr. crashed on the Wallston Road in St. George at about 4:30 in the afternoon and fled the scene by running into the woods. The car caught fire, police called in a search dog from Waldo County and caught Melquist a short distance away from the burning car.
Pirate Parlay
(Prospect) Pirates take over Fort Knox in Prospect for the next 3 days. Friends of Fort Knox director Leon Seymour says a pirate ship will invade the Penobscot River today as one of the many activities during Pirate Parlay. Similar to Fright at the Fort, Seymour says Dead Pirate Curse haunts the fort tomorrow night and is recommended for a mature audience.
Camper Fire
(Ellsworth) Motorists on High Street in Ellsworth flagged down a North Carolina family headed home after their 2-week vacation because their camper was on fire. Ellsworth Fire Captain Kevin Kane says the driver pulled into the parking lot near Cadillac Mountain Sports around 11 and quickly unhooked the camper. Kane says the fire started when wires from batteries short circuited and ignited the pop up camper. No one is hurt.
Bastille Day
(Castine) Castine pays homage to its French heritage today by holding a Bastille Day celebration. Promoter Chrissy Allen says it’s for all ages to enjoy. Bastille Day event activities can be found at: Visit Castine dot Com.
Car Fire
(Liberty) A Fairfield man escaped his burning car without injury Thursday. The driver pulled over to the side of a road in Liberty and a Maine State Trooper just happened to drive by as the fire started. Police say the vehicle is a total loss.
Robbery Sentencing
(Waterboro) A Waterboro man who robbed a Hollis business last October has been sentenced. 29-year-old Marcus LeFebvre pleaded guilty last week to Felony Criminal Threatening. He’ll spend 9 months in jail then be on probation for 2 years.
Embezzlement
(Scarborough) Authorities arrested an office manager at a Falmouth physician for allegedly embezzling from a healthcare benefits program. 45-year-old Carrie Caporino is accused of stealing 600 checks totaling about $250-thousand-dollars payable to the physician. Court records say Caporino deposited those checks into her personal bank account from December 2015 to June 2017. If convicted Caporino faces up to 10-years in prison and a quarter-million-dollar fine.
Safety Award
(Addison) The fire department in a small Washington County town is being recognized for their commitment to safety. Addison Volunteer Fire Department has earned the Safety and Health Award for Public Employers, better known as the SHAPE Award. It’s given only to exemplary public-sector employers after a thorough review and inspection of the employer’s safety and health policies and procedures by a Safety-Works consultant.
Store for Sale
(Hope) The owners of a historic general store in mid-coast Maine say it’s up for sale. The Hope General Store building was built in 1832. Its past lives include serving as an antique store, general meeting place, and post office.
Cheaper Lobster
(Portland) New England’s summer lobster season is off to a slow start, but consumers are still paying a little bit less for lobster than they were a year ago. Fishermen and distributors say the annual summer boom in lobster catch has yet to arrive. Lobster catch typically picks up when many lobsters shed their shells and reach legal harvesting size.
Bugman Homeless
(Augusta) The Maine man who dumped a cup of live bedbugs in a city center last month says he doesn’t regret his actions, even though he is now homeless as a result. 72-year-old Charles Manning, of Augusta, tells the Kennebec Journal that he released the bedbugs at the Augusta City Center to officials to know what he had been dealing with, but targeted the wrong office.
Sports
The Red Sox face the Yankees tonight at Fenway Park, Drew Pomeranz is on the mound for Boston.
Venus Williams will face Garbine Muguruza for the women’s title at Wimbledon. Both won their semi-final matches yesterday.
Jack Wyman of South Freeport won the Maine Amateur Golf title yesterday. Deer Isle’s Sam Grindle came in 2nd.
