Union – Fatal Crash
(Union) – A head-on crash in Union left drivers of both vehicles dead. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department reports to Star 97.7 the crash on Route 17 closed the road for about 3-hours yesterday afternoon. Dead are 52-year old Sherry Cloutier of Augusta and 49-year old Angela Knight-Boege of Warren. Chief Deputy Tim Carroll says Cloutier’s car was on the wrong side of the road when the cars hit head-on They were the only people in the cars.
Sexting Arrest
(Bangor) – When police in Bangor got a report of a man texting a teen aged girl with sexual messages, they took over the youngster’s phone and texted back. Detectives set up a meeting, and when 51-year old David Lawrence showed up at the door, they were waiting for him. Lawrence is charged with attempted sexual assault of a minor, which is a class “D” crime.
Ambulance Crash
(Masardis) – Two ambulance attendants in Aroostook County went to the hospital, but not in the rig they were originally driving. WABI-TV reports that ambulance flipped over after hitting a utility pole in Masardis early yesterday morning. They were the only two in the rig from Fort Kent. The driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel. Their injuries are not life threatening.
Drones-What’s Legal
(Hancock Cty) – A Hancock County sheriff’s deputy says a complaint he handled this week was the first time he’s dealt with a drone issue in his 12-years on the job. Deputy Eric McLaughlin tells Star 97-7- a homeowner reported a drone was flying over his property and taking pictures or video. He said tracking a drone’s owner is nearly impossible. McLaughlin predicts there will be more problems with drones before lawmakers deal with the issues that surround them.
Blood Donations
(Maine) The American Red Cross urges all eligible blood donors to please roll up their sleeves and give a pint as the organization falls short of expectations for the second month in a row. Spokeswoman Mary Brant says the Red Cross is down about 61-thousand donations. Blood donations can be made at Narraguagus High School on July 18th and at the University of Maine Machias on July 20th. Child Porn
(Brewer) A Brewer man will spend nearly 6-years in prison for possessing child porn. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97.7 that law enforcement used a peer-to-peer file sharing program to download files from 38-year-old Ronald Boersma’s computer in February 2016. Boersma admitted to having the illegal images and pled guilty last November. Once he gets out of prison he’ll go on supervised release for 15 years.
Senior Gun Threat
(Scarborough) A senior citizen in Scarborough was taken to the Cumberland County Jail for an incident Tuesday. A woman called 9-1-1 after Willis Moulton was allegedly drunk and pointed a handgun at her. When officers arrived at the Black Point Road home the woman had safely escaped while the 74-year-old Moulton remained inside. Police coaxed him out with a loud speaker, took him into custody and recovered the handgun. Moulton’s charged with Domestic Violence Criminal Threatening.
Family Dollar
(Blue Hill) – The Planning Board in Blue Hill has given the go-ahead for a Family Dollar Store on South Street. More than 3-dozen people turned out for the hearing on the proposal, and reaction to developer Tom Ellis’s plans were mixed. Opponents said they didn’t want to see South Street look like High Street in Ellsworth. Others say they’ll be glad they won’t have to drive to Ellsworth to shop at the discount store. The Ellsworth American reports there’s no timetable to start construction.
Anonymous Donation
(Ellsworth) Families First Community Center is reaching out to the community to say “thank you” for a $15-thousand-dollar anonymous donation they received. In a news release, board president Dawn Carter Coffin says the generous donation came as a complete surprise. The Center aims to break the cycle of homelessness before it’s passed down to the next generation. Homeless Rate
(Augusta) While homelessness has decreased 9 percent, the director of Maine’s Statewide Homeless Council is urging businesses and the private sector to donate more to make up for a lack of public money. Cullen Ryan, the acting director of the council, says there’s still a lot of work to be done despite the encouraging decrease. The Kennebec Journal reports Maine experienced a 9 percent reduction in homelessness from fiscal year 2016 to 2017.
