Princeton Home Invasion
(Princeton) – A father and son from Princeton are charged with aggravated assault and burglary after a home invasion and stabbing. Washington County Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree reports to Star 97.7 that deputies arrested 49-year old Joel Hayward Sr. and his 24-year old son Joel Jr. after a late morning 9-1-1 call yesterday. Police found a Mill Street home owner bleeding from the head when they arrived. He’ll be OK after he was treated and released from a Calais hospital. A search dog led deputies and state troopers to a camper trailer on Willow Street in Princeton where they the Haywards were living. They located the pair elsewhere in town.
Attorney Scam
(Ellsworth) – Police in Ellsworth say the latest telephone scam involves a call purporting to be from a local law firm trying to sell people medical alert devices. On its Facebook page, the police department says the caller ID number shows it comes from a law firm, but it’s most likely a spoof number. The law firm says it does not sell medical services or devices.
Ferry Terminal Meeting
(Bar Harbor) – Officials in Bar Harbor seek ideas on what to do with the former Bay Ferries Limited terminal on Eden Street. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Martha Searchfield reports to Star 97.7 that a visioning meeting is set for next Monday at 6-o’clock in the municipal building. Another session is planned for a week later. A consultant will lead the visioning meetings following last month’s vote that allowed a zoning change at the terminal that potentially will let the town build a pier at which cruise ships could dock.
Quarry Sale Halted
(Rockland) – City councilors in Rockland have paused a proposed sale of an abandoned quarry. At least two bids to buy the former Engine Quarry. One involved a land swap and trail development, and the other offered cash for the quarry the city obtained many years ago. The quarry has been a popular but dangerous swimming area in the past, and has also been an illegal dumping ground. Village Soup dot-com reports councilors tied on a vote to sell the quarry last night, but may revisit a sale in coming weeks.
George Nixon Black Jr Day
(Ellsworth) Today is George Nixon Black Junior Day in Ellsworth. Woodlawn Museum executive director Joshua Torrance says they hope that today locals will reflect on the gifts Black gave to the city, the Tisdale House which is now the Public Library, and the Woodlawn Museum. Today would’ve been Black’s 175th birthday.
Stabbing
(Machias) – Machias police say a Sprague Way man suffered stab wounds to his upper torso early yesterday morning, and they’re searching for three people who entered his mobile home. The victim received treatment at Downeast Community Hospital and later at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. The wounds are not life-threatening. The 9-1-1 call came in shortly before 3:30 yesterday morning. Police are still looking for suspects.
Pipe Beating & Stabbing
(Waterboro) York County deputies called to break up a 20-person fight in Waterboro on Friday. Police say a man with a metal pipe hit several people then pulled a knife and stabbed one person in the back repeatedly. The suspect was arrested by deputies and a police K9 was able to locate the weapon after it was tossed under a car in an overgrown field. The victim was life-flighted to the hospital in unknown condition. The unnamed suspect is charged with Elevated Aggravated Assault and two counts of Aggravated Assault.
Nat’l Monuments
(Katahdin) The public comment period ended yesterday for people to weigh in on the future of the Katahdin Woods and Waters national monument. Legislative director at the National Parks Conservation Association, Ani Kame’enui says President Donald Trump’s executive order to review the monuments amounts to an attack on the Antiquities Act, which grants the president the power to protect these special places on land already owned by the federal government. Reports say more than 99-percent of those who commented favored keeping the Katahdin Woods monument designation.
Moose-Wreck
(Howland) A Fort Kent woman was in critical condition after her car hit a moose on Interstate-95 near Howland. State police say 23-year-old Maya Linnell was headed north when she collided with the moose around 1:30 in the morning Saturday. The impact tore the roof off her car; motorists in two other vehicles also struck the dead animal in the road suffered minor injuries. The Lifeflight helicopter flew Linnell was flown to a Portland hospital.
New Laws
(Augusta) A few bills from Maine’s GOP governor are now law following action from Republicans and Democrats. Now, career and technical education programs can serve sixth to eighth graders. Another new law lets the state modify licensing requirements for certain military veterans with training in a particular field.

Aaron Judge wins the home run derby at the All-Star Game in Miami
Red Sox ace Chris Sale will start for the American League at the All-Star game tonight. Max Scherzer will start for the National League.
