Road Construction
(Ellsworth) – The pavement plants will start cranking out asphalt-covered stone today in Hancock County as a couple of major paving projects resume following the July 4th holiday. Route 1 east of Ellsworth will get a new road surface after workers spent the last few weeks grinding off the top layers of old, cracked pavement. That project will take place at night to minimize the impact on heavy daytime traffic. Same story for Route 1-A between Ellsworth and Dedham. The Route 3 reconstruction project in Bar Harbor is on hold for the rest of the week, but utility crews will continue moving poles and lines beginning today.
Belfast Courthouse
(Belfast) – A new court house construction project in Belfast will see a pre civil-war era home demolished to make room. WABI-TV reports the white house on Market Street was built in 1825, and the city could not find any interest in someone moving the building elsewhere, so it’ll come down. The state plans to build a brand new court house on the lot, combining District and Superior Courts.
Chase/Crash
(Bangor) – A state trooper spotted a stolen vehicle out of New Hampshire while patrolling Interstate 95 in Fairfield last night. He activated the blue lights, and the driver sped off. That started a chase that ended in a crash on Broadway in Bangor. WVII-TV reports troopers had shut off most of the interstate exits along the way and tried to spike the vehicles tires. It’s not yet known who was driving and whether they suffered any injuries.
Fugitive Arrested
(Bangor) – Police in Bangor arrested a man wanted in connection with a domestic assault in Holden who was also wanted by the US Marshals service. An officer spotted 41-year old Michael Weston at the Maine Smoke Shop at the Airport Mall yesterday. He’s now held without bail at the Penobscot County Jail. The Bangor Daily News reports Weston was wanted for the assault which involved a knife, and also for cutting off an ankle monitor about two months ago. He was on probation for a drug charge.
Fatal Crash
(Charleston) A Kenduskeag man died in a single vehicle accident. State police tell WABI-TV they’re investigating why 29-year-old Joshua Long veered off Main Road in Charleston and hit several trees around 2:45 Monday afternoon.
MMP-OUI
(Damariscotta) Police have charged an off-duty Maine Marine Patrol officer with drunken driving following a head-on collision during the weekend in Damariscotta. The Lincoln County sheriff’s Department arrested 26-year-old Brandon Bezio of Tenants Harbor early Saturday after the collision. In March, he was named Marine Patrol Officer of the Year by the Maine Lobstermen’s Association.
Dog Adoptions
(Bangor) The latest round of dogs rescued from kill shelters in Mississippi and Georgia go up for adoption at the Bangor Humane Society today. WABI-TV reports the shelter brought in about 30 puppies and adoptions start at Noon, but it’s recommended you go in early and get a number. If you’re not a dog-person the staff at the Bangor Humane Society says they also have several litters of kittens available for adoption.
Recovery Summit
(Washington Cty) Business owners and human resource staff are invited to a discussion about the challenges associated with hiring people recovering from addiction. A panel of experts will share information about addiction, available treatment and recovery supports, and will talk about strategies for success. “Addiction, Recovery and the Workforce”, a summit for Washington County businesses of all sizes, is a free event on July 13th from 8:30AM to 3PM at the University of Maine in Machias. Theater Camps
(Ellsworth) Not all summer camps are outside in the hot Maine woods. The Grand in Ellsworth is offering theater camps for kids in Kindergarten through 12th grade. The Grand’s education director Jasmine Ireland will lead the 3 groups who will practice at various times throughout the summer and perform at the end of their term. Gordon Hayward has chosen the Celtics. The All-Star forward made his decision late yesterday afternoon. He played college basketball for Celtics coach Brad Stevens. He signs for 4-years. Hayward averaged almost 22-points a game last season.
