Acadia Park Closures
(Bar Harbor) – Yesterday was a perfectly lovely day to head to Acadia National Park. Apparently a lot of people had the same opinion, and that prompted park officials to post a plea on their Facebook page for people to use the Island Explorer bus system to visit as they contemplated shutting down several roads due to traffic congestion. This is one of the busiest weeks of the summer season for park visitors, and typically congested roads include the Cadillac Mountain summit road and the Park Loop Road.
Swanville – Assault
(Swanville) – State police have issued an alert for a 44-year old Swanville man following a domestic violence assault in which the victim ended up in the hospital. Authorities say Jason Young faces several charges including aggravated assault. The assault happened this weekend in Swanville.
State Closure
(Augusta) – The State of Maine closed down during the weekend, and it won’t reopen today. State lawmakers have yet to send a budget to Governor Paul LePage’s desk and worked late into last night to try to come up with a deal that everyone could live with. There’s no deal yet this morning. Meanwhile, the Governor has tried to soften the blow to state workers, declaring an administrative closure today, meaning state workers will get the day off with pay, presuming a new budget will be retroactive to Saturday. Emergency workers will get a compensatory day off once a budget passes.
Bangor – Burglary Arrests
(Bangor) – Two Bangor men face burglary and theft charges after allegedly breaking into parked cars. Sergeant Tim Cotton reports to Star 97.7 that officers arrested 25-year old Jonathan Singleton and 31-year old Harold Parsons after catching them trying to break into cars on 15th Street. Officers left their patrol cars and hid, snuck up on the pair and observed them rummaging through the parked cars. The two suspects tried to run off but Officers Shane Smith and Jordan Perry ran them down.
Route 3 Project Halt
(Bar Harbor) – Motorists headed to and from Bar Harbor will get a bit of construction reprieve this week. The Department of Transportation says work on the Route 3 reconstruction project has halted beginning today and will resume next Monday. Utility crews, though, will resume work on Wednesday. The road reconstruction has caused massive traffic problems on Mt. Desert Island and heavy traffic on side roads, including Crooked Road. The July 4th week is traditionally the busiest in Bar Harbor.
Fireworks-Ellsworth
(Ellsworth) It’s been 5 years since the Maine Legislature allowed individual municipalities to craft their own consumer fireworks ordinances. For Ellsworth residents who may need a refresher about what is and isn’t allowed, Ellsworth police chief Glenn Moshier says head to the city’s website to review the fireworks ordinance. Heroin Arrests
(Brewer) Two Bangor men face multiple charges after a hit-and-run accident last week. Brewer police say they located 29-year-old Justin Grover and arrested him for Operating after Habitual Offender Revocation, Violating Release Conditions and Failure to Report an Accident. 29-year-old Taylor Harriman was a passenger in the car and was arrested for Probation Revocation. Officers observing the two men had the vehicle impounded and obtained a search warrant. Police found heroin, cash and other items, adding additional charges to Grover and Harriman.
Dad-Prison
(Belfast) A Northport father accused of causing serious injuries to his infant son heads to prison for 2 years. 20-year-old Neil Lagasse was arrested last December and pleaded guilty to assault last week. WABI-TV reports Lagasse brought his 11-week old son to the hospital in Belfast a couple days before Christmas. The boy suffered broken bones and was flown to a Portland hospital for further treatment.
Skunk – Police
(Rockland) Rockland police have affectionately deemed one of their officers an “animal whisperer” after coming to the aid of wildlife in need. Last week officer Addison Cox wrangled a baby raccoon back into the woods. Thursday night police got a call about a skunk wandering around an apartment complex parking lot with a jar of peanut butter stuck on its head. Cox was able to pull the jar off the skunk’s head without injury and without getting sprayed.
Sports
Boston Red Sox 15 Toronto Blue Jays 1 (Mookie Betts 2 homers, 8 RBIs, Drew Pomerantz got the win. Sox have a 3-game lead in the American League East, tonight, Rick Porcello is on the mound against the Rangers in Texas.
The Boston Celtics met with free agent Gordon Hayward yesterday in an effort to convince the All-Star to sign with Boston.
