Storm Washout
(Ellsworth) – A mess around the roads near the Ellsworth Elementary Middle School during a powerful thunderstorm yesterday. Lightning hit a tree near the school. That knocked out electrical systems at a nearby housing complex. At the same time a water main burst, dumping a couple hundred thousand gallons of water down Forest Avenue while the downpour added to problems. That washed out the road between the school and Shore Road. Public works crews will repair the pipe and the road today.
Killer convicted
(Bangor) – A 38-year old New York City man is guilty of murdering one and wounding another in a 2015 shooting in Bangor. A judge yesterday ruled that Thomas Ferguson was an accomplice in the killing that left Robert Kennedy of Bangor dead. The man who pulled the trigger, Robert Hansley was convicted earlier this year. The two had apparently confronted the men in trying to settle a drug debt.
Sullivan Town Manager
(Sullivan) – Voters in Sullivan have approved changing their form of government to include a town manager. Debate dominated this week’s annual town meeting, with a clear majority of the more than 100 residents present voting in favor. Selectmen will begin to search for a manager in the coming months. Sullivan becomes the second Hancock County town to adopt the manager form of government; Deer Isle voted a few weeks ago to do the same.
MDI Police Radios
(Bar Harbor) – Police serving the four communities on Mt. Desert Island all use different radio frequencies, making it difficult to communicate with one another. The National Park Service has now offered up use of a new frequency for Bar Harbor and Mt. Desert, and police chief Jim Willis says that will help solve a communications problem. Willis says he’s talking with Southwest Harbor about using the same frequency. Tremont is covered by the Sheriff’s Department. Willis said some of the dispatch equipment will need upgrading to use the new channel.
Brass & Gas
(Lamoine) – If you’ve driven around Hancock County at all this week, chances are good you’ve seen some pretty old cars on the road. Raney Bench of the Seal Cove Auto Museum tells Star 97-7 these are some of the oldest and rarest road worthy cars in the nation. Wednesday the cars descended on Lamoine in a scavenger hunt. Bench says the owners and drivers have come from all over the country for the event they call Brass and Gas. And while the cars travel pretty slowly, Bench says they get mostly positive reaction from the modern vehicles behind them.
Gouldsboro Standoff
(Bar Harbor) – The Seal Harbor man arrested after a standoff in Gouldsboro had quite a long streak of alleged offenses this week. Bar Harbor/Mt. Desert police chief Jim Willis tells Star 97.7 that 32-year old Alan Walton’s spree started early Tuesday morning with a stolen car report that led to a pair of car chases and then a domestic assault in Bar Harbor. Walton got into an armed confrontation when Gouldsboro’s police chief went to a home where Walton was staying. The state police tactical team responded and arrested Walton without injury.
Woman Found
(Alna) A Game warden K9 team located a missing 84-year-old Alna woman. Yesterday the Maine Warden Service received a call from Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department requesting assistance with locating Helen Smith from Alna. Smith is believed to have Dementia and was overdue for her insulin for Diabetes. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife tells Star 97.7 Within 30 minutes and just prior to dark, Game Warden Dave Chabot and K9 Ruby completed a successful track of Smith and located her approximately four tenths of a mile in the woods behind her residence. Smith was taken back to her residence where she was evaluated by medical personnel.
Accidental Shooting – Winn
(Winn) – A 20-month old girl is recovering from a gunshot wound at Eastern Maine Medical Center. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department reports to Star 97-7 that the toddler suffered the wound Monday evening. A family member brought her to a medical center in Lincoln and she was transferred to the hospital in Bangor with non life-threatening injuries. The shooting took place at a home in Winn. Sheriff Troy Morton said those involved have cooperated with investigators. They’re not releasing names.

Ellsworth tennis coach Brian Higgins has been honored as the National high school girls tennis coach of the year by the National High School Coaches Association. Higgins has led his teams to more than 600-wins over his career, which also include being one of the nation’s top soccer coaches.
