Suspect Killed
(Newton, NH) – A man described as armed and dangerous and wanted for a sex assault in Aroostook County is apparently dead after a police chase, car crash and shootout that ended in New Hampshire. Michael Brown allegedly stole a pickup truck in Presque Isle last week. Police in Malden Massachusetts spotted the vehicle and gave chase, ending in New Hampshire. During the chase Brown reportedly fired shots at state troopers. The chase ended when his vehicle crashed into a tree and police opened fire, killing Brown.
Principals
(Ellsworth) – School superintendents are filling some key vacancies as the school year comes to an end and preparations start for next fall. Bucksport has hired away the principal at Deer Isle Stonington High School. Todd West will become the middle school principal in Bucksport. In Ellsworth, current athletics director Tim McCluskey will become the elementary school principal. And another athletic director will become the principal at Central High School. Brett Hoogterp takes the spot vacated when Central’s principal took the top spot at Brewer High School.
Deer Isle/Town Manager
(Deer Isle) – Deer Isle Selectmen are looking for a town manager now that voters have approved a major change to the local town government. Tuesday’s vote passed by a nearly 2-to-1 margin. The Island Ad-Vantages reports Selectmen will start to search for a manager to run the municipal government as the town transitions away from having elected officials conduct day to day operations. A hearing later this summer will gather public input in what to look for in a new manager.
Birdsacre Grant
(Ellsworth) Excitement at Birdsacre Sanctuary in Ellsworth Thursday as board members received a check from the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation. Voters selected Birdsacre as one of the $5-thousand-dollar winners in the Community Matters More campaign. President Grayson Richmond says some of that money will go toward the finishing touches of the fire restoration efforts on the Stanwood Homestead.
Deputy-25 years
(Ellsworth) A major mile stone for a Hancock County Sheriff’s deputy. Corey Bagley celebrates 25 years of serving the community he lives in and says “it’s been interesting”. Bagley spent several years with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, but was moved back as a patrol deputy earlier this year.
Boaters Dead
(Fort Fairfield) – Game wardens searched a chilly Aroostook County lake by air and boat yesterday, towing a sonar device, looking for two men missing and presumed drowned. The lone survivor’s mother says one of the men likely saved her son’s life by untangling him from an anchor line. Wardens have recovered another man’s body from Square Lake.
Women’s Wellness Fair
(Blue Hill) Blue Hill Memorial Hospital hosts the 6th annual Women’s Wellness Fair. Vendors gather at the Bay School in Blue Hill from 4 to 6:30 Tuesday afternoon to share free information with the public. Hospital community relations manager Kelley Columber says it’s not your traditional wellness fair. No registration is required and Columber says attendees receive a free gift.
DEF-Y Cuts
(Ellsworth) Several local agencies who appeared before the Ellsworth city council earlier this year saw their funding unexpectedly cut during a workshop meeting last week. The Ellsworth American reports the City Council cut more than $150-thousand-dollars from the draft budget, including $20-thousand-dollars from the Downeast Family YMCA. The Y’s CEO Peter Farragher said it was a surprise and a really significant cut. Property taxes are still likely to go up by almost 2.7-percent. The City Council meets Monday night to give final approval on the $12.8-million-dollar city budget.

Red Sox reliever Tyler Thornburg will undergo season ending shoulder surgery. He has not pitched for Boston since the Sox acquired him in a trade with Milwaukee last winter.
Celtics great Bill Russell will receive a lifetime achievement award from the NBA.
State High School softball and baseball championship games are set for tomorrow.
