Cruise Ship Votes
(Bar Harbor) – Voters in Bar Harbor have OK’d a zoning change at the former Bluenose Ferry terminal that would allow for eventual construction of piers to accommodate cruise ships. Town Clerk Patricia Gray reports to Star 97-7 a pair of cruise ship questions attracted more than 36-percent of the towns voters to the polls yesterday. They handily passed question 12, the zoning change, and rejected a citizen petitioned ordinance that would have allowed citizens to choose the capped number of cruise ship passengers allowed on any given day. The passenger cap will continue to be discussed and set by the Town Council each year on the recommendation of the Cruise Ship Committee.
School Budget Validations
(Ellsworth) – Voters in Ellsworth and Lamoine validated their communities’ school budgets yesterday. Turnout in Ellsworth was about 10-percent with only that question and a state bond question on the ballot. Lamoine’s turnout was slightly higher at about 12-percent. Both budgets saw increased property taxes needed to fund the schools for the next fiscal year.
Phish Drummer Elected
(Lincolnville) – The Waldo County town of Lincolnville may have just elected Maine’s coolest Selectman. Jonathan Fishman, the drummer for the alternative band Phish, won a seat in yesterday’s balloting, finishing 2nd in a 3-person race for two seats on the Board of Selectman. Fishman owns the soon to open Lincolnville General store.
Rosen Resigns
(Augusta) – Maine’s Finance chief has resigned. Governor Paul LePage’s office reports to Star 97.7 that he has accepted Richard Rosen’s resignation as commissioner of Administrative and Financial Services. Rosen is a Bucksport native and served several terms in the Maine Legislature where his wife Kim is currently a senator. Rosen won wide praise from the Governor and Senate President Mike Thibodeau.
Police Academy Shooting
(Vassalboro) – A jail guard is recovering after surgery for a gunshot wound suffered while he was attending the police academy. State police say 33-year old Matthew Morrison of Mars Hill was a passenger in a car with two other corrections officers when one was handling a gun and it went off, hitting Morrison in the leg. The Life Flight helicopter flew Morrison to a Portland hospital. The DA’s office is reviewing the case.
Drug Arrests
(Skowhegan) Skowhegan police continue to look for a person who escaped out a window during a drug raid. WABI-TV reports police raided a Summer Street apartment last Friday. When police arrived 6 people and a pit bull confronted them. Police found 16-thousand-dollars worth of drugs, more than 5-thousand-dollars in cash and other evidence of drug sales. All 6 people arrested but a 7th person remains on the run.
Car Arson/Burglaries
(Skowhegan) Skowhegan police and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating a string of vehicle arsons and burglaries at the West Front Residence apartments early Monday morning. Police posted on Facebook that no one was injured and they offer tips to avoid becoming a victim of such crimes – they say always lock your doors, keep your schedule private by not posting on social media that you’re away on vacation, if you see something-say something, and respect your neighbor.
Mom Indicted
(Bucksport) – Grand jurors in Hancock County have indicted a former Bucksport woman who allegedly took her child to Florida without permission. The DA’s office posts that 30-year old Leona Laue flew the 9-year old to Tampa in March and is charged with Felony Criminal Restraint. District Attorney Matthew Foster says he’s chosen not to extradite Laue to Maine because of the high cost. He says if she returns to the state, there’s a warrant for her arrest.
Nat’l Monument Review
(Salt Lake City) President Donald Trump’s call to review 27 national monuments established by 3 former presidents put in limbo protections on large swaths of land home to ancient cliff dwellings, towering sequoia trees, deep canyons and ocean habitats where seals, whales and sea turtles roam. Trump and other critics say presidents have lost sight of the original purpose of the law that was designed to protect particular historical or archaeological sites rather than wide expanses.
Mills on Monument
(Augusta) Democratic Attorney General Janet Mills says she will challenge any executive branch actions by President Donald Trump’s administration to abolish a national monument in northern Maine. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke today is set to tour the Katahdin wilderness that comprises a national monument that’s one of more than a dozen that’s under review by Trump. Mills says under the federal Antiquities Act, only Congress and not the president has the authority to abolish a national monument.
