Deer Isle/Manager
(Deer Isle) – Voters in Deer Isle will decide tomorrow whether the community should hire a town manager. For most of the town’s history one of the Selectmen has run day to day operations of the town government at the town office. The proposal would allow Selectmen to hire a town manager instead, though most of the key town staff positions would remain elected, including the town clerk, tax collector, treasurer and road commissioner. Selectmen tell the Ellsworth American that the three elected leaders have regular jobs and not enough time to devote to completely running the town.
Stranded
(Bar Harbor) – A small island just a few hundred yards off Bar Harbor is accessible by vehicle and on foot at low tide, but every year police and park rangers deal with people who get stranded when the tide comes in. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Acadia National Park has posted a sign warning people about the tide situation and advising them if they get stranded to call a private water taxi company. The trip costs about $150-dollars to get off Bar Island, or they can wait out the tides for 9-hours. Police say if there is a true medical emergency, a town boat can get close enough to the island to make a rescue.
