Richmond Death
(Tremont) – A former town manager in Tremont, Steuben and Carmel has died. Tom Richmond served as the manager in Carmel until a stroke according to his obituary. He was the manager in Tremont prior to that. Richmond came into the town management field after a long career in a paper mill in his hometown of Livermore. Richmond was 72-years old.
Housing Forum
(Bar Harbor) – For a lot of people with jobs on Mt. Desert Island it’s darned near impossible to afford to live there. That was the conclusion after this month’s housing forum sponsored by Island Housing Trust. The Mt. Desert Islander reports there was a lot of talk about establishing affordable housing to keep workers living on MDI where wealthy non-residents have snatched up a lot of the available housing for summer homes. No long term solutions resulted from the forum, but organizers say plenty of ideas did emerge.
Officer involved shooting
(Belgrade) – The Attorney General’s Office has taken over the investigation of an officer involved shooting in Central Maine. The Kennebec Journal reports a Kennebec County Deputy shot a man to death and wounded another after responding to calls of a disturbance on Route 11 in Belgrade. They’ve not yet released names. Neighbors say there was a loud altercation between at least two men at the home, and at one point one person drove a vehicle into a mobile home.
Zuckerberg/Maine
(Millinocket) – Facebook founder and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg spent the weekend in Maine. Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan celebrated their wedding anniversary with a dinner in Bangor and then spent Saturday hiking the Appalachian Trail in Millinocket. He posted pictures from the weekend on his Facebook page, along with a lengthy post about the Millinocket region. Zuckerberg also expressed some regret about not getting to see the Bangor Police Department’s Duck of Justice.
Child Killed
(Alton) – Police have identified an 18-month old boy killed when a truck hit him in the Alton Elementary School parking lot. Drake Sechrest was with his family watching a go-kart in the school’s parking area when he wandered away just as the school janitor was driving out of the lot. The janitor’s truck had traveled less than 10-feet when he hit the toddler. State Police continue to investigate.
Prison Closing
(Machiasport) Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport is slated to close June 10th and all 46 employees received layoff notices. Governor Paul LePage deems the closure a cost saving measure. State Senator Joyce Maker says the fight isn’t over to keep the prison open. Maker says residents can help by sending letters to legislators stating how important the Downeast Correctional Facility is to Washington County.
Alewife Counters
(Orland) Volunteers are needed to help count alewives at the Orland Dam on Fish Pond Road. Resident and volunteer Jake Maier says volunteers work in 30-minute shifts and have clickers to keep track of these important fish. Maier conducts volunteer alewife counter training at the Orland Dam. Call 944-0032 to sign up.
Arson Arrest
(Oxford) An Oxford man who lit a newspaper on fire in the hallway of his apartment complex is in jail facing arson charges. Investigators say the Tuesday morning fire was at the doorway of an elderly resident who heard the fire alarm but couldn’t exit her apartment because of the flames. No one was hurt. Investigators allege 29-year-old Timothy Williams was mad at another tenant in the building.
Airport Disaster Training
(Trenton) – Lots of fire trucks and ambulances at the Hancock County Airport in Trenton for a disaster drill. Lots of rescue boats, too. The drill simulated a plane crashing into the water off the airport. Boat rescue crews from Lamoine and Trenton ferried the 13-mock victims to shore. Hancock County Deputy EMA director Brad Nuding says the drill is required every 3-years. At the aftermath, participants said there were some communication problems that could be addressed, though part of the problem was that the radio channels used normally would not be in play for a real disaster.
Rockland City Manager
(Rockland) A Virginia man is the finalist for the Rockland city manager post. Village Soup Dot Com reports Christopher Philbrick of Dumfries Virginia has extensive managerial experience. He was one of four candidates interviewed by the search committee and the only name forwarded to the council. An interview has yet to be set up with Philbrick to introduce him to department heads and Rockland citizens.
