Money Order Plea
(Bangor) – A woman who worked at a variety store in Hermon would write small denomination money orders for herself, then change the amount to big bucks. The US Attorney’s Office tells Star 97.7 that 30-year old Allison Pluard admitted to the fraud, pleading guilty in federal court yesterday. Pluard will find out her sentence later – she could get up to 5-years in prison and pay a quarter million dollar fine. Investigators say the losses exceeded $4,200 dollars.
Social Security Fraud
(Bangor) – A 60-year old Bangor woman who lied to the Social Security Administration could spend up to 5-years in prison and pay a quarter million dollar fine. Prosecutors tell Star 97-7 Shirley Reynolds collected SSI payments for almost 7-years, claiming she lived alone. Reynolds actually lived with her husband, but knew that her benefits would get reduced. She pled guilty yesterday and will find out her sentence later.
Frankfort Fatal
(Frankfort) – A box truck slammed into the back of a vehicle stopped on Route 1-A in Frankfort. The crash killed the woman driving the stopped car. Police closed down the busy road between the Loggin Road and Route 69-in Winterport for much of yesterday afternoon to reconstruct the accident. Authorities did not immediately release the drivers’ names.
Drug Charges Dismissed
(Ellsworth) – Prosecutors have dropped drug charges against a Sullivan man arrested with three others in a bust last February. WABI-TV reports not enough evidence existed to take Matthew Liese to trial on criminal conspiracy charges. The DA’s office also dropped charges against two New York men arrested during the bust. Charges remain against 32-year old Sherman Merchant who is also accused of bringing drugs into the county jail.
Kayaking Death
(Millinocket) A whitewater kayaking incident claimed a Millinocket man’s life. Warden Service spokesman John MacDonald reports to Star 97-7 rescuers tried to revive 25-year-old Joseph Giffune on Sunday. He got stuck in a hydraulic hole while kayaking with a friend in the West Branch of the Penobscot River. When rescuers pulled Giffune from the water downstream he showed no signs of life. Rescuers pronounced him dead at the scene.
Smoking Bus
(Ellsworth) – No injuries yesterday when a school bus full of students started smoking in Ellsworth. Deputy Fire Chief Gary Saunders tells Star 97.7 the students safely evacuated from the bus on Christian Ridge Road. He says they’re not sure what caused the bus to smoke. About 30-kids were on board the bus and on their way home from school – none were hurt.
Illegal Elvers
(Scarborough) A Massachusetts man found with more than 16-pounds of glass eels is charged with possessing elvers without a license. Maine Patrol officers arrested 51-year-old Joseph Starratt in Scarborough after they got an anonymous tip through Operation Game Thief. He faces up to a year in jail and a 2-thousand-dollar fine.
ATV Crash
(SW Harbor) Serious injuries after police tried to pull over a 24-year old ATV rider in Southwest Harbor. Police chief Alan Brown says they responded to Seal Cove Road late Friday night. 24-year old Taylor
Sanborn went to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor in critical condition.
Manslaughter-OUI Sentence
(Portland) A Scarborough man pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated OUI in connection with a fatal hit-and-run last year. A judge sentenced 33-year-old Devin Brown on Monday to 5 years in jail then 4 years on probation, with his license suspended for a decade. The Bangor Daily News reports prosecutors say last November Brown hit bicyclist 25-year-old Brandon Dumond and kept driving. Brown later crashed into an embankment and police say his blood-alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.
Pantsuit Author
(Blue Hill) The Maine woman who created the once secret Facebook group Pantsuit Nation will share tales of overnight success. Libby Chamberlain of Brooklin started the online group last November by asking a few friends to wear pantsuits to the election polls in support of Hillary Clinton – the group now has millions of members. Chamberlain has released a book with stories and photos contributed by Pantsuit members. She’ll speak at the Blue Hill Public Library on May 23rd starting at 7PM where you can purchase a book and have Chamberlain sign it.
Salt Factory Fire
(Hermon) A fire at a factory in Hermon could’ve been a lot worse. Seven fire departments responded to the Maine Salt Factory on Coldbrook Road around 4 Sunday afternoon where a forklift was on fire inside the building. Hermon Fire Assistant Chief Eric Pelletier tells WVII-TV crews worked quickly to put out the flames and prevent the building from being damaged, especially because of the large propane tanks located directly behind the factory. No injuries were reported.
Guided Hike
(Surry) A hike through the newly acquired Surry Forest will be led by Blue Hill Heritage Trust executive director Hans Carlson. The community is invited to the 3-mile trek on dirt roads through more than 21-hundred acres. Hikers will meet at the gated entrance off Chestnut Lane on Saturday and set off promptly at 10AM.
Woodlawn-Mom’s Day
(Ellsworth) Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth celebrates Mother’s Day by giving moms free admission this Sunday. The Seal Cove Auto Museum will bring its 1921 Mercer automobile for free rides at Woodlawn from 1 to 4. Families are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy Woodlawn’s public park and walking trails.
