Jordans Closed
(Ellsworth) – A family tragedy means a popular Ellsworth take-out restaurant will not re-open. Jordan’s Snack Bar owners Carol and Shawn Jordan say it’s with much sadness that they’ve decided to stay closed after Shawn’s son Andrew died a couple of weeks ago. They say his death made it impossible to carry on with the quality of customer service, and they need time to decide how to move forward. The Jordans have operated the take-out for 35-years.
Heroin Dealer Sentence
(Portland) – A 30-year old heroin dealer from Maine will spend 8-years in federal prison after pleading guilty to selling the deadly drug. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97-7 that a judge sentenced Darnell “Butta” Robinson of Auburn yesterday. Prosecutors say Robinson sold a thousand dollars worth of heroin to a witness working undercover for drug agents a little over year ago. He pled guilty in January.
Old Jail, Falling Bricks
(Ellsworth) – The signs posted at the former county jail in Ellsworth advise motorists to park at their own risk. Every now and then a brick will fall from the old building now owned by the historical society. The Ellsworth American reports the Hancock County Commissioners worry about liability should a brick hit a parked car or a person, and discussed loaning the historical society money to shore up the bricks.
Lincoln Manager Charged
(Lincoln) – The latest town manager for Lincoln faces criminal charges. State Police issued a summons to 50-year old John Sutherland of Lincoln for allegedly breaking into his daughter’s former boyfriend’s home. The Bangor Daily News reports that Sutherland, who took the Lincoln job after serving as the town administrator in Lubec, denies the charge. The former boyfriend said Sutherland was trying to get a picture of his truck that was involved in an accident.
Deer Isle Causeway
(Deer Isle) – The narrow, winding causeway road that connects Little Deer Isle to the rest of Deer Isle and Stonington is getting a much needed fix. The Department of Transportation is replacing the large rocks that line the causeway, widening the road and adding guardrails. They’ll pave the road next week. WVII-TV reports the $300-thousand dollar project is designed to improve road safety.
Missing Man
(Union) The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a missing 44-year old Lewiston man. Kevin Mitchell’s wife reported him missing Saturday. Deputies found Mitchell’s car in Union, where he has some ties, but there’s no sign of the man. The Sheriff’s Office reports to Star 97.7 they’re concerned for Mitchell’s safety.
Cruise Ships
(Bar Harbor) It’s cruise ship season in Bar Harbor. Harbormaster Charlie Phippen says preparing for a ship’s arrival can sometimes begin up to 2 years in advance. Phippen says 163 ships are scheduled to visit Bar Harbor this year, the most in Bar Harbor’s history.
OUI Charge Tabled
(Bangor) – Prosecutors say they will not move forward with an OUI charge against former Bar Harbor police chief Nathan Young for now. Penobscot County Assistant District Attorney Chris Chu tells the Mt Desert Islander there isn’t enough evidence to prosecute Young for his drunk driving arrest last Christmas in Bangor. Should more evidence surface Chu says the D-A will reconsider.
Bee Bill Withdrawn
(Portland) A bill designed to protect bees in Maine from a class of pesticides has been withdrawn in the wake of criticism from agricultural interests. The bill would have put limits on the use and sale of insect-killing pesticides that are among a number of factors that have been blamed for falling bee populations.

(Augusta) Lawmakers in Maine are considering a bill that could remove ordinances aimed at restricting the use of pesticides in communities. Republican Gov. Paul LePage wants to prohibit cities and towns from placing restrictions that are more strict than those on the state books. The local laws apply to chemicals that are used to do things like kill invasive and disease-carrying insects.
War Veteran-Netflix
(Manchester, ME) A Maine soldier who lost all four limbs during an explosion in Afghanistan and went on to start a foundation for veterans is sharing his story in a documentary on Netflix. U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills’ documentary titled “Travis: A Soldier’s Story” debuted Monday. The documentary details his family, fellow soldiers and his recovery. Mills started a foundation to help soldiers like himself who suffered combat injuries.
