Dentist Settles
(Portland) – A retired dentist from mid-coast Maine will pay back the state and federal government for ripping the Medicaid system off. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97.7 that Dr. Joseph Griffin submitted more than $160-thousand dollars in bills to the Maine Care program for services that he never rendered, were not needed, or were not medically necessary. Griffin’ who is from Damariscotta, could only pay back $90-thousand dollars and reached a settlement with prosecutors.
Stettner Death
(Southwest Harbor) – Many in Southwest Harbor are mourning the loss of a community activist and visionary who founded the Common Good Cafe and the Good Tern Soup Kitchen. Larry Stettner died Monday at the age of 79. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Stettner and Bill Morrison started the Cafe in 2009, selling low cost meals in the summer with part of the proceeds helping to fund the soup kitchen that operated in the off-season.
Snow Bowl Repayment
(Camden) – The Town of Camden got a check for more than $360-thousand dollars from a private foundation which is helping redevelop the Camden Snow Bowl. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the money is part of what the Ragged Mountain Recreation Area Foundation promised to help with the rebuilding project. That effort went more than $730-thousand dollars over budget and saw the town manager and recreation director resign from their posts. An audit was highly critical of the town’s financial policies on the project.
Still Missing
(Lebanon) State police continue looking for a 52-year-old Lebanon man missing since last week after a domestic violence incident at his home. Dale Godfrey is wanted for domestic violence assault. A multi-agency search in a wooded area turned up Godfrey’s checkbook in a stream. Police say Godfrey hasn’t shown up for work, and there’s no activity on his cell phone or bank accounts.
MCMH Breast Clinic
(Ellsworth) Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth will renovate its breast clinic ahead of new 3D mammographic imaging technology to be installed later this year. Philanthropy Director Jack Frost says several events helped the hospital raise $400-thousand-dollars. Frost says the 3D technology will greatly improve the quality of care offered at the breast clinic.
ANP Tourist Dollars
(Bar Harbor) – A new report says visitors to Acadia National Park spend more than a quarter billion dollars in the local economy. The National Park Service says the 3-point-3 million visitors annually support 42-hundred jobs. The bulk of the spending is on lodging and food, but visitors also spend money for gas, park admission and fees, souvenirs and transportation.
Heroin Arrest
(Massachusetts) A Dixfield woman is held on 25-thousand-dollars bail in Massachusetts after police found 90 grams of heroin found during a traffic stop. The Bangor Daily News reports 23-year-old Courtney Dyke was the passenger in a vehicle on its way back to Maine that a state trooper pulled over for a broken headlight. The trooper noticed white powder on the center console and searched the car. Dyke and the driver from Massachusetts face drug charges and possessing ammunition without a Federal Identification Card.
Revenue Projections
(Augusta) Maine state revenues are forecast to dip below previous projections this year but jump in future years. The state revenue forecasting committee’s May report comes as lawmakers continue work on Governor Paul LePage’s two-year, $6.8 billion budget proposal. The committee said it’s unclear whether taxpayers are shifting income or if a new income surtax is masking a big drop in estimate income.
Eel Vote
(Augusta) – It’s time for a lottery to get into the elver fishing business. That’s the vote from the Legislature’s Marine Resources Committee and the matter will go to the full Legislature. Elver fishing has started to pick up this spring, and many fishermen have filled their quotas already. The baby eels fetch nearly $2-thousand dollars a pound some years and are only harvested in Maine and South Carolina.
Guns on Campuses
(Augusta) Higher education leaders say campuses would be less safe if lawmakers pass a Maine Republican’s campus carry bill. Todd Tolhurst of Gun Owners of Maine at a hearing said killers operate with impunity in gun-free zones. The president of Maine’s community college system says more people with guns drawn when police arrive is dangerous.
