Bangor Shooting
(Bangor) – One person is wounded after a shooting in Bangor Sunday. Police Chief Mark Hathaway reports to Star 97.7 officers responded to Ohio Street at 3-o’clock yesterday afternoon. They called in a police dog and crime scene investigators gathered evidence at the scene. They’re not saying much, and they’ve not released the victim’s name or health condition yet. Officers say the general public is not in danger.
Brewer Body
(Brewer) – Police in Brewer say a man’s death near Wal-Mart is not suspicious and the public is not in danger. The Bangor Daily News reports someone found the body Sunday morning off Wilson Street in Brewer. Police say they know the man’s name, but they’re not releasing his identity until family is notified. The Medical Examiner’s office will follow up on the investigation.
Hit & Hide
(Mt. Desert) – A 51-year old Trenton man faces charges after a roll over accident in Mt. Desert yesterday. Police found Timothy Levesque hiding in the bushes not far from the accident scene on Route 102 near an entrance to Echo Lake. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Levesque apparently drifted onto the shoulder, overcorrected and flipped his SUV over. Investigators who took Levesque to the Hancock County jail said it does not appear Levesque was intoxicated.
Wildfires
(Old Town) – Fire rangers spent much of the weekend helping investigate and extinguish wildfires in Eastern Maine. The fire danger Saturday increased to high thanks to warm weather and a stiff breeze. Rangers report they responded to 33-wildfires statewide, and some of them spread to buildings. Rangers remind Mainers that burn permit from the local fire warden is required before doing any outdoor burning, and the restrictions on the permit must be followed.
Capital Campaign
(Ellsworth) Special Children’s Friends helps a couple dozen special needs children in Hancock County, most of them autistic. Executive director Linda Henderson says they’ve outgrown their space on Union Street in Ellsworth and they have a capital campaign to put on a 42-by-42-foot addition. Henderson says they’re 30-thousand-dollars short of their goal but will break ground anyway on May 8th. To donate to their capital campaign log on to: Special Childrens Friends dot Org.
Hit & Run Indictment
(SW Harbor) A Southwest Harbor man has been indicted for a hit and run last year that seriously injured a man. WABI-TV reports 52-year-old Scott Merchant is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury or death, criminal OUI, driving to endanger, aggravated assault, and assault. Last September police responded to the incident on Rout 102 where a 29-year-old man from New Jersey was hit by a car while walking his dog. The victim was life-flighted to a Bangor hospital. Merchant’s car was found shortly after the accident and he was arrested.
Elver Fishing
(Local) About a thousand Maine residents hold elver licenses, and more than 3 weeks into Maine’s elver fishing season fishermen on average have been earning about $900 per week. The Bangor Daily News reports the current price for glass eels is about 15-hundred-dollars per pound. The statewide quota for elver is 9-thousand-6-hundred-16 pounds. If that quota is met, it would result in fishermen raking in 14-point-5-million dollars this year.
Fundraiser Update
(Ellsworth) Staff members from Healthy Acadia served tables at Pat’s Pizza in Ellsworth earlier this month as a fundraiser. Healthy Acadia reports they received over 13-hundred-dollars in tips to go toward their Hungry for Health 2017 campaign to Challenge Cancer Downeast. Pat’s also contributed to the cause, bringing their fundraising total to over 16-hundred-dollars. “Challenge Cancer Downeast” will include partnering with restaurants across Hancock and Washington counties throughout the year. Money raised supports cancer prevention, patient navigation, and additional supportive programming offered by Healthy Acadia and the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center.
