Eastbrook Fatal
(Eastbrook) – No one inside a Ford Focus wore seat belts, and when it slammed into a utility pole in Eastbrook, they all flew out of the vehicle. State police tell Star 97-7 that 24-year old Kirk Chandler of Sullivan died in the crash. The LifeFlight helicopter flew 25-year old Chase Debeck of Eastbrook to Eastern Maine Medical Center and an ambulance took 19-year old Maryah Sprague to Maine Coast Memorial, both had serious injuries. Investigators say speed and substances including alcohol were factors in the crash.
Waldoboro – Historic Fire
(Waldoboro) – It took years to build a mansion in the early 1800s in Waldoboro, but only a few hours for it to go up in flames yesterday morning. Firefighters responded to the Isaac Reed mansion at about 3:30 in the morning. The fire started in an apartment – the occupants who were spending their last night in the building escaped without injury. The flames quickly spread and left the historic home nothing but a pile of burned lumber. The fire marshal’s office will try to find the cause. Reed was one of the more prominent Mainers around the time it became a state in 1820. He is credited with helping design the state seal.
Burnham Death
(Burnham) – An elderly Waldo County woman who called 9-1-1 to report a home invasion has died, and police have questioned the woman they found inside the home, but have not made an arrest yet. 72-year old Joyce Wood of Burnham called 9-1-1 and then family members to report the break-in. Her family put her in a car outside the home where she died. The medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy. State police call it a bizarre set of circumstances.
Libel Suit
(Bar Harbor) – An attorney who represents the Town of Bar Harbor is asking that a court dismiss a libel lawsuit filed by a fellow attorney. Arthur Greif claims that attorney Robert Crawford of Burnstein Shur libeled him in a letter sent to town officials that requested Greif to stop communicating to the town in regard to location of an electric substation. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Crawford’s firm says there is no libel because Greif is a public figure and that there has to be malice in any statement in a libel dispute.
