Kidnapping charges
(Blue Hill) – Authorities in Hancock County say two Blue Hill men pulled a car over on a side road, displayed a gun and claimed to be working with police addressing a drug problem. One of them pulled an occupant out of the car and fired the gun into the air while the other interrogated two others in the vehicle. Charged with kidnapping and impersonating an officer are 55-year old Ken Charles and 35-year old Brian Fowler. The Ellsworth American reports the duo was charged last week for last September’s incident.
Helicopters – Lamoine
(Lamoine) – A citizen’s group in Lamoine has requested that town Selectmen craft an ordinance to regulate how low tourist helicopters can fly. One member of Friends of Lamoine said that noise from helicopters is bothersome and causes her to remember the Vietnam war. The Hancock County Commissioners earlier this month approved of letting a tourist helicopter fly out of the airport in Trenton. Selectmen rejected the ordinance request after getting legal advice that only the FAA can regulate aircraft operations.
Cap’n Nemos
(Tremont) – A federal magistrate is recommending that a judge toss out another count filed by the owners of the former Cap’n Nemo’s restaurant. The Mt. Desert Islander reports that charge had to do with a stop work order the Town of Tremont issued when owners Robert and Judy Cousins started rebuilding closer to the road than allowed. The Cousins have five counts left on a lawsuit they filed against the town claiming firefighters allowed the restaurant to burn in December 2013 because the town held a grudge against them.
Mt. Desert Managers
(Southwest Harbor) – The Town of Southwest Harbor is in no hurry to search for a new town manager. Don LaGrange is stepping down in June of next year, but will remain as the town’s part time code enforcement officer. LaGrange became the manager in 2011. Meanwhile, Tremont’s Board of Selectmen has extended town manager Dana Reed’s contract for two more years. Reed came to Tremont after serving well over 20-years as Bar Harbor’s town manager.
McLean – Contempt
ELLSWORTH, Maine (AP) – American Pie singer Don McLean’s ex-wife wants entertainer found in contempt of court for tweeting about her shortly after she was granted a protection order. A Maine court granted the order for Patrisha McLean this month. Don McLean pleaded guilty last year to domestic violence assault. Patrisha McLean filed papers seeking a contempt order Tuesday in court in Ellsworth, Maine. She says she was disparaged by Don McLean less than 48 hours after the protection order was issued. His verified Twitter account posted a message saying he was “delighted” to give his ex-wife a protection order “since it protects me from her for two wonderful years.” Don McLean’s attorney says the allegation is “unfortunate” and that McLean will keep their ongoing disagreements in court.
Felony Kidnapping
(Tampa, FL) Authorities will extradite a Florida mother back to Maine for kidnapping her 9-year-old child during a visitation Monday. Hancock County Sheriff’s deputy Eric McLaughlin says while 29-year-old Leona Laue was in Maine she took her child on a plane back to Florida without the father’s permission. Because the child was removed from the state of Maine, McLaughlin says Laue is charged with Felony Criminal Restraint.
Illegal Power
(Wales) – State police arrested a Wales man after they allegedly caught him stealing electricity from a power pole and transformer in the central Maine town. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland tells Star 97-7 a trooper observed 36-year old Nicholas Gagne climbing a pole, then followed Gagne to an outbuilding and arrested him. It’s not the first time Gagne has hooked into a line illegally. He was out on bail for the same charge. Central Maine Power was called in to inspect their equipment.
Overdose Workload
(Augusta) Maine is dealing with so many drug overdose deaths that the state medical examiner is asking for more money to handle the workload. The epidemic of heroin, fentanyl and other opioids is behind a record number of overdose deaths – 378 last year in Maine. The chief medical examiner wants to hire an additional pathologist to get caught up.
Collins-Acosta
(Bangor) Maine Sen. Susan Collins says President Donald Trump’s labor secretary nominee should work to protect the Trade Adjustment Assistance program if he is confirmed. Collins, a Republican, is a member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. She questioned nominee Alex Acosta about the trade adjustment program during a confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
LePage – Anti-Monument
(Portland) Maine’s Republican governor says he’ll testify before Congress against a national monument in his state. Then-President Barack Obama created the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument last summer on nearly 90,000 acres of donated forestlands. Maine Gov. Paul LePage opposes the designation.
