Tax Fraud Sentence
(New York) – A 72-year old summer resident of Islesford will spend more than 5-years in prison after his conviction on tax fraud charges. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Morris Zuckerman got his sentence this week in New York State. Among the fraudulent activity was Zuckerman’s purchase of 240-acres on Black Island off Frenchboro. He was supposed to buy the land for Maine Coast Heritage Trust, but kept it for himself, despite writing off the purchase as a charitable contribution.
Ellsworth – Dogs Seized
(Ellsworth) – Police in Ellsworth say they rescued a dozen dogs from a Water Street home before they got too ill to treat. The woman who kept the dogs is also getting treatment. WVII-TV reports they’re not identifying the woman as she is not charged with any crime. Lt. Harold Page said the woman got into an overwhelming situation and is cooperating with officers who in turn are trying to make the situation safer.
Penobscot River Rescue
(Brewer) – A man who jumped into the Penobscot River from the Veterans’ Memorial Bridge connecting Bangor and Brewer clung to a cement abutment and waited for rescuers to reach him. Police from both sides of the river and the Bangor Fire Department converged on the scene after State Police saw the man jump from the bridge. A Bangor firefighter in an ice-rescue suit pulled the 18-year old from Holden into an inflatable boat and rescuers got him up a steep bank and into an ambulance. Authorities did not identify the teen, but indicated he might be autistic.
Paid Family Time
(Augusta) Two lawmakers are behind bills calling for paid family leave. Independent Representative Owen Casas’s conceptual bill would require employers to provide more time and flexibility to certain employees who become parents. Democratic Rep. Mattie Daughtry’s bill would create a paid family leave insurance program funded by employee contributions.
Hero-Victim to Reunite
(Westbrook) A woman who survived a head-on crash will soon meet the man she credits with saving her life. 27-year-old Terra Hansen of Gorham spent 3 weeks recovering in the hospital following the crash February 28th on Route 25 in Westbrook. Hansen tells WABI-TV a man came to her car window and stayed with her until help arrived. Hansen kept saying she wanted to go to sleep but the man insisted she couldn’t. Hansen said she thought she was going to die and believes the good Samaritan keeping her awake is what kept her alive. A photo taken moments after the crash went viral, showing the mystery man standing by the car. That man has agreed to meet Hansen but wishes to remain anonymous.
ANP Falcons
(Bar Harbor) Acadia National Park officials say peregrine falcons are again defending nesting territories at the Precipice, Jordan, and Valley Cove cliffs. The National Park Service has closed the cliffs and associated trails to the public to protect the falcons from disturbance or harassment during the nesting period. The cliffs should reopen by mid-August if nesting attempts succeed. Public entry into a closed area is a violation of federal regulations, which is punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both.
ANP Jobs
(Bar Harbor) Acadia National Park is hiring Visitor Service Assistants to help manage traffic and parking at the busiest locations this summer and fall. The National Park Service says its launching this pilot program to help inform and develop the park’s Transportation Plan. Heroin/Crack Arrest
(Bath) A New York man was arrested this week in Bath for allegedly selling heroin and crack cocaine. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency reports 31-year-old Dashawn Gill sold drugs to undercover agents during their month-long investigation. On Monday agents searched an apartment where Gill was selling drugs from and seized 21 doses of crack cocaine, a loaded semi-automatic handgun and a thousand dollars in suspected drug proceeds. Local residents who allowed Gill use of their apartments in exchange for money and drugs may face charges, pending review of the case by the Attorney General’s Office.
Augusta Drug Arrest
(Augusta) – A 47-year old Augusta man faces drug trafficking charges after local police arrested him yesterday. Deputy police chief Jared Mills reports to Star 97.7 they charged Michael Fry with trafficking after finding several doses of heroin in his Newland Avenue home. Officers estimate the heroin was worth about a thousand bucks on the street. Fry’s bail is set at $10-thousand dollars.
Daycare Expansion
(Ellsworth) – A vacant plumbing supply store on Beechland Road in Ellsworth will become a child care center to serve employees at Jackson Lab when it opens the former Lowe’s building next year. The Downeast Family YMCA will operate the child care center which will accommodate up to 70-children. Executive Director Peter Farragher says there is currently a waiting list for the child care program at the Moore Community Center. The new daycare center will open in the fall and employ 15-to-20 people.
Job Site Hacked
(Topeka, KA) A website that connects job seekers with employers reports someone hacked the site and possibly compromised people’s sensitive information. America’s JobLink is a multi-state web-based system that has operated for about 50-years. Officials say it’s the first security breach the company has experienced. Applicants from 10 states, including Maine, had their names, social security numbers, and birthdates viewed by the hackers.
Batman-Playground Fundraiser
(Bar Harbor) Superhero enthusiasts from all over New England will gather in Bar Harbor this Saturday for a fundraiser. Chris Schwartz, also known as Bar Harbor Batman, says he’s created the first ever Bar Harbor Comic Con to raise money for the Park Street Playground Project. Schwartz says his wife developed the Park Street Playground Project. Bar Harbor Comic Con starts at 11 this Saturday at the Atlantic Oceanside.
