David Rockefeller Death
(New York) – The man whose family gave the land that makes up much of Acadia National Park has died. David Rockefeller continued the tradition of land donations to the park, giving about a thousand acres to celebrate his 100th birthday last year. Rockefeller died yesterday in New York. His grandfather made the family fortune in the oil business. The famous family owned a home in Seal Harbor. David Rockefeller was 101 years old.
Washington County Indictments
(Machias) – Prosecutors can proceed with action against two Washington County men accused of using deadly force last year in separate incidents. Grand jurors last week indicted 24-year old Ethan Bryant of Cutler and 37-year old David Tinker the 2nd of Perry on elevated aggravated assault charges. Bryant turned himself in after a shooting in Cutler last December. Tinker allegedly got involved in a drug related robbery last September and stabbed a man.
Hare Hunters charged
(Great Duck Island) – Six hunters face fines after shooting 87-hares on Great Duck Island last Saturday. That’s 67-rabbits over the one day limit. Warden Service spokesman John McDonald reports they got a tip about the hunters; five were from Massachusetts and one from Southwest Harbor, Maine. Game Wardens, Marine Patrol Officers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service converged on the island and issued tickets.
Prison Vote
(Augusta) – It looks like the Buck’s Harbor prison in Machiasport has escaped closure once again. Members of a Legislative committee yesterday voted against the plan to shut down the minimum security prison and monitor the inmates using ankle bracelets. Another committee vote is needed to scrap the latest closure plan. About 150-inmates are housed in Buck’s Harbor which employs 51-people full time.
Walt McFarland Passes
(Lamoine) – A long time and well liked Ellsworth businessman has died. Walt McFarland and his wife owned the Giant Sub shop and Blueberry Hill Ice Cream stand for the past 50 years. He also worked for 43-years for CK Foster plumbing supply which is now Bangor Pipe on Foster Street. The Lamoine resident died at his home yesterday morning. He was 87 years old.
Illegal Pet Shop
(Skowhegan) A Skowhegan woman’s home was searched Friday for operating as an illegal pet shop. Eleven dogs were rescued and brought to the local humane society for medical care. Police tell WABI-TV 32-year-old Nicole Bizier used the aliases Sarah Lancaster and Sara Plummer to sell puppies online. State police investigated in January after 4 people contacted them about buying dogs that were improperly vaccinated. Animal welfare officers discovered the vet records were fake. Despite being told to stop, Bizier continued to sell dogs online. She’s now charged with animal cruelty, theft by deception and illegal operation of a pet shop.
Mental Evaluation
(Skowhegan) A mental evaluation has been ordered for a Fairfield man accused of shooting his wife to death then burying her in a shallow grave behind their home last year. The Morning Sentinel reports a pretrial conference for 33-year-old Luc Tieman is scheduled for May as his lawyer awaits the results of medical records. The evaluation will help determine if Tieman is competent to stand trial, which is tentatively set for November. Valerie Tieman’s body was found September 20th with fatal gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
Citizen of the Year
(Ellsworth) – A Lamoine man will get the honor as Ellsworth’s Citizen of the Year this spring. Donald Clark who has led numerous community fund raising events with the Elks Club and other organizations while battling cancer is the winner of the Chamber of Commerce award. Clark helps to organize a secret Santa program each Christmas and recently retired as a cable TV technician. He’ll receive the honor in May at the Chamber’s annual meeting.
BB5K
(Ellsworth) The 5th annual Boggy Brook 5K raises fund for the Hancock County Technical Center. Money raised will help send 10 kids to Kentucky to compete in the national Skills USA competition. Multi-media instructor Ben Speed says the race is right in the school’s backyard. Registration is available online at: Hancock DOT Ellsworth Schools dot Org.
Meth Arrests
(Burnham/Howland) Maine Drug Enforcement agents have been busy dealing with two unrelated meth labs. Last Thursday the Howland Fire Department responded to an apartment on Westside Lane after a report of smoke and a strange odor. Firefighters suspected a meth lab and called in Penobscot County deputies and the Maine DEA meth lab response team. 52-year-old Kelly Moore was charged with Aggravated Operation of a Meth Lab. In Burnham state police conducting a bail check on North Horseback Road found an active meth lab inside the mobile home. On Saturday 29-year-old Amber Nayock was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine and was transported to the Waldo County Jail.
