Trenton Traffic Light
(Trenton) – Engineers say they’ve fixed a traffic light that has drawn numerous complaints in recent weeks in Trenton. The so-called “Cheese House” light often would stay red for traffic trying to turn onto Route 3 from Route 204 for several minutes, even if there was no traffic on Route 3. That would result in cars ignoring the red light entering Route 3 anyway. Turns out a connection between the camera detection system and the computer that controls the lights had corroded, and the cameras were not working. The fix yesterday saw much shorter red lights in all directions.
Rockland Landfill
(Rockland) – There used to be a saying, Camden by the Sea, and Rockland by the smell. Part of that smell was the city’s landfill which saw garbage, manufacturing residue, and even sludge from the sewer plant dumped into quarries. The garbage disposal will end in 2019. Village Soup dot-com reports the city puts only construction debris into the quarries now, but under an agreement with the Department of Environmental Protection that will end in a couple years, and the landfill will be covered with clay and grassed over. Besides the stench that emanates from the landfill, contamination has shown up in local wells.
Route 198 Rebuild
(Mt. Desert) – Voters in Mt. Desert will decide whether the town should come up with a half-million dollars both this year and next to rebuild a section of Route 198. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the town would partner with the state of Maine on the 2-year, $2-million dollar project. The road that leads into Northeast Harbor is quickly deteriorating and town public works director Tony Smith says it needs an entire rebuild for a 2-point-2 mile section.
Stabbing Plea
(Bangor) – A Virginia woman who stabbed two strangers in the Bangor Mall in 2015 has pled no-contest to aggravated assault. The Bangor Daily News reports 36-year old Elizabeth Ellis will receive her sentence at a later date after yesterday’s plea which means she is convicted. Ellis has stayed at the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center to determine if she was competent to go to court. A judge yesterday asked why she did not plead insanity. After the June 2015 stabbings, Ellis drove to Farmington and turned herself in to police. Neither victim received life-threatening injuries.

Bagel Break-in
(Bangor) More action in the downtown Bangor restaurant community, but not the good kind. Two girls were caught on surveillance video allegedly trying to break in to the back doors at Bagel Central. The business posted the footage on their Facebook page asking for help identifying the two girls. Manager Scott Bryson tells the Bangor Daily News they received many personal messages and had the girls names within minutes. No charges have been filed and police have spoken to the girls and their parents.

The Gorham superintendent tells the Bangor Daily News that Village Elementary School and Gorham High School were placed in a soft-lockdown for about an hour Monday as police blocked off South Street. The gunman was said to have entered an apartment building but police were unable to find the alleged suspect, and Gorham police chief Dan Jones questions why only one witness saw the man with the gun.
