School Delays
(Ellsworth) – Public works crews are scraping down and salting the roads this morning after snow turned to ice then rain overnight. Most school systems are open today, but they’re starting classes two hours late for the most part. No major road problems are reported this morning. A larger storm is expected starting tomorrow that could dump up to 8-inches of snow on Downeast Maine.
Robbery Arrests
(Bangor) – Police have arrested two men they say terrorized the Greater Bangor area one morning last November. Both 27-year old Shane Palmer and 54-year old Kirk Dephilippo face three robbery counts in connection with the string of hold-ups. Bangor police report to Star 97-7 the duo allegedly kicked in a door at a Lincoln Street residence, then broke into an apartment on Bolling Drive and demanded money, and finally they held up Dysart’s Truck Stop in Hermon, stealing the cash register and the $500-dollars in cash inside. Both Bangor and State Police detectives worked together and tracked down Dephilippo and Palmer.
Elite Leaves Hancock County Airport
(Trenton) – A try with commercial jet service at the Hancock County airport in Trenton last summer is over. Elite Airways says it will not return for another season. Elite didn’t advertise, and the planes were only half full during the 27-flights out of Trenton. Airport Manager Brad Madiera tells the Ellsworth American the facility is in danger of losing a federal subsidy because not enough people are using the airport, opting instead for larger facilities in Bangor, Portland or Boston.
Saddleback Fire
(Sandy River) – A major fire at a condominium complex near the Saddleback Ski area in Sandy River yesterday. Firefighters from several communities responded to the scene at about 4-o’clock in the afternoon. Several buildings in the Rock Pond condos collapsed in the fire. The ski area did not open this winter.
Palmyra Fire
(Palmyra) – Two people are dead after yesterday’s early morning fire in Palmyra. The blaze on Square Road destroyed a farmhouse that was converted into six apartments. 9-others made it to safety. The Fire Marshal’s office says it will release the victims names after relatives are notified. The fire likely started in apartment over a garage, but there was so much damage, the cause will likely never be known.
The Grand
(Ellsworth) The Grand Theater in Ellsworth will unveil its new digital projector system by offering a free viewing of Disney-Pixar’s “Up” in 3D. Grand Board President Carla Haskell says the new system is in place, but they have more money to raise before they hit their fundraising goal. The 3D screening of the movie “UP” is this Saturday night at 7:30 and donations are welcome.
Wildfire Prevention
(MDI) Emergency officials say wildfire is the biggest natural disaster threat to Mount Desert Island. Mount Desert fire chief Mike Bender will conduct a free seminar tonight about wildfire protection. Bender says they’ve studies some of the numerous fires out West. The free seminar starts tonight at 6:30 at MDI Adult Ed, on Eagle Lake Road in Bar Harbor.
Monhegan Island
(Augusta) A Maine lawmakers says Monhegan Island would be jeopardized by wind energy testing and should be protected from it. Senator Dana Dow, a Lincoln Republican, says he has submitted a bill that would prohibit the placement of a wind energy test area within 10 miles of the Monhegan Island Lobster Conservation Area.
