Northern Bay Closure
(Penobscot) – A 42-bed assisted care facility in Penobscot will likely shut down on Sunday and residents will have to start moving into other facilities. The Northern Bay Residential Living Center is connected to the Penobscot Nursing Home and both facilities were placed into state receivership many years ago. Under the latest plan from the Department of Health and Human Services the owners were supposed to find a buyer by January 15th. No buyer has come forward.
Barn Collapse
(Sherman) – Yesterday’s rain combined with previous snowfall over inland areas made snow on roofs very heavy, and that’s likely behind a barn collapse in Sherman that killed a horse. It happened on the Silver Ridge Road according to WVII-TV. Two horses were in the barn when it came tumbling down. One horse was rescued, but the other didn’t make it.
Ellsworth Garden Club
(Ellsworth) – The way plants and trees are arranged in Ellsworth’s city parks and around its buildings is actually a pretty well thought out plan. The Ellsworth Garden Club is looking for more input on what it calls the city’s Green Plan. President Mary Blackstone says anybody who lives, works, or frequents Ellsworth is invited to the public consultation session in the Ellsworth City Hall Auditorium tonight at 7:30. The Ellsworth Garden Club has initiated Green Plans twice in the city’s history – in the 1950’s with the development of Donald Little Park and in the 1980’s when they began landscaping the Public Library.
Netflix Scam
(Local) Police across Maine are warning of an email scam targeting Netflix customers. The phishing email looks realistic and uses legitimate servers that were compromised. It asks Netflix customers to log in and update their membership information. After doing so, a second screen appears asking the user to validate their payment information by entering a credit card and social security number. After Netflix customers have provided their information on the fraudulent website, they are re-directed to the actual Netflix homepage.
Cop Sentenced
(Portland) An ex-cop from Brunswick will spend a year and a day in jail for sending nude photos of himself to someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl. In May last year parents of an Arizona teen told police a man was having a sexual conversation with their daughter online. A special agent posing as a 14-year-old girl made contact with the man, Garrett Brosnan, who was a Brunswick police officer at the time. Brosnon sent naked pictures and asked for some in return. He was arrested in June last year, then in September he resigned from the police department and pleaded guilty to the charges.
Pot Laws
(Augusta) – Lawmakers say they’ll need more time to put rules in place about selling marijuana for recreational use. A bill backed by Ellsworth Democrat Louis Luchini and Winterport Senate President Mike Thibodeau would give the state 3-more months to develop rules for pot sellers. The bill would modify the law approved by voters last November to allow marijuana use only in a private residence prior to February 2018.
Pot Blocking
(Portland) Three more Maine towns have taken steps to limit retail marijuana establishments. Maine voters in November narrowly approved a referendum legalizing marijuana. The Portland Press Herald reports Clinton put an emergency moratorium on such establishments. Skowhegan officials agreed to move forward with an ordinance barring retail marijuana establishments and social clubs. Winslow approved a first reading for a moratorium.
Not Guilty Plea – Fatal Crash
(Portland) A box truck driver has pleaded not guilty in a crash in Casco last year that left a popular Naples middle school teacher dead. Authorities say Joshua McNally was driving a Native Maine Produce truck in April when it crashed into a car driven by Adam Perron. WCSH-TV reports McNally pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to manslaughter and causing a death while having a suspended or revoked license.
LePage Loses 50lbs
(Portland) Maine Gov. Paul LePage says he had weight loss surgery and jokes that now “there’s 50 less pounds of me to hate.” The Republican revealed the bariatric surgery for the first time Wednesday on a radio show. He says he underwent the procedure on Sept. 29 and returned to work a day later. He says his doctor told him he needed to lose weight to avoid diabetes.
King – Trump
(Washington) Senator Angus King of Maine is among those who support amending the law to allow the retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis to serve as defense secretary under President-elect Donald Trump. King said he supports a one-time exception to current law that requires a former member of the military to be out of active duty service for at least seven years to serve as defense secretary. There’s been only one previous exception, in 1950.
Thwarting Cyber Attacks
(Portland) A pair of senators including Maine’s Sen. Angus King is renewing its efforts to get protections for the country’s energy infrastructure against cyber-attacks. King, an independent, is partnering with Idaho Republican Sen. Jim Risch on the push to pass the Securing Energy Infrastructure Act. They say the proposal seeks to examine ways to defend the energy grid.
Unsolved Murders
(Portland) Police in Portland are seeking information to help solve a pair of seven-year-old murders. Police say Darien Richardson and Cory Girard were shot while sleeping in Richardson’s apartment on Jan. 8th, 2010. The pair were awoken by a masked intruder who entered their room and began shooting.
(How does someone know they were awoken by a masked intruder if the 2 people were shot to death?)
