High Winds
(Bangor) – Power company linemen and firefighters are among those on the job this morning as heavy winds buffet Eastern Maine. More than 15-hundred homes and businesses in the Emera Maine area have lost electricity. Firefighters have responded to numerous calls for trees on power lines and across roads. The temperature has risen dramatically in the past 24-hours from near zero to the mid 40s. The winds will likely continue for much of the day, though the rain is expected to pass through.
Lobster Boat Monitoring
(Augusta) – Maine’s Marine Patrol is looking for lawmakers to pass a bill to allow them to install surveillance equipment on board lobster boats without boat owner permission. The Legislature killed a similar bill in the last session. Currently marine patrol officers need probable cause to install audio and video bugs on board lobster boats. In the past year, the agency has dealt with fishermen who exceed their 800-trap limit, molesting other lobstermen’s gear, and other mayhem.
Bottle Found
(Stonington) – A Stonington fisherman has hauled up a bottle that has some history to it. The green glass bottle John Jones pulled up while dragging for scallops turns out to be a Moses bottle first given away in 1876 by the Poland Springs hotel. WVII-TV reports it’s not particularly valuable – worth about $65 dollars in good shape.
Bangor Search
(Bangor) – Searchers continue to look for a Bangor man who vanished early last month after attending a party on Sanford Street. 29-year old Paul Francis the 3rd, who went by the street name “June Bug” was described as police as despondent. The Bangor Daily News reports police saw no images of Francis when they reviewed several surveillance video recordings in the downtown Bangor area.
Armed Robbery Arrests
(Orono) – Orono police arrested 3-people after an armed robbery at an apartment. WABI-TV reports a man in a mask demanded money from occupants of an apartment in the Orchard Trails complex. One person gave the robber cash, but another pulled a gun and scared off the suspect. Police dogs followed tracks to another apartment in the complex and arrested 20-year old Clark Thomas of Rockport and 21-year old Michael Lynch of Orono. They also charged 20-year old Katelyn Heiman with hindering apprehension in Sunday night’s hold up.
Rockport Fire Update
(Rockport) – Fire investigators say a Rockport man’s chair was too close to his wood stove, and that caused the fire that badly injured him. Investigators were able to talk with Bruce Fales at Maine in his Portland hospital room after the Sunday fire destroyed his trailer. Fales was able to jump out of a bedroom window and crawl down the driveway where firefighters found him when they arrived on scene. The trailer did not have working smoke detectors.
Acting Chief
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth City Councilors unanimously confirmed the appointment of the interim police chief during their Monday night meeting. Captain Glenn Moshier was named the interim chief following the abrupt resignation of Chief Harold “Pete” Bickmore at the end of December.
