Drug Bust – Franklin
(Franklin) – A Cherryfield man faces drug possession charges after a traffic stop in Franklin. State Police report to Star 97.7 that 45-year old James Strout is accused of having crack cocaine and suspected heroin in his vehicle. Trooper Dana Austin stopped Strout this week and a drug sniffing dog detected the drugs. Another passenger, 45-year old Clifford Seavey, is jailed on a warrant for outstanding fines.
Motel Manager Speaks Out
(Bucksport) – A Bucksport motel manager denies that he assaulted young children left in his care last year. Bucksport police charged 29-year old Kaleen Adnan with several assault charges after a 6-year old girl claimed he locked her in a refrigerator. Adnan tells WVII-TV it never happened and surveillance video will prove that. He said drug charges after a search found illegal substances in his room were not accurate either. He said the drugs were in a common area of the Spring Fountain motel which he managed.
Bar Harbor – Trash Change
(Bar Harbor) – Bar Harbor residents can no longer get rid of their bulky waste items for free. The Mt. Desert Islander reports that folks will have to pay to dispose of large items at the EMR Facility. Town councilors noted that truckloads of bulky waste items such as mattresses from motels would roll into EMR and claim they were from Bar Harbor residents and take advantage of free disposal that was costly to the town. Town councilors also approved ending glass recycling, and instead having residents toss glass into the trash where it will be separated out at the Fiberight plant that will come on line soon
Free Fishing Weekend
(Maine) It’s free fishing weekend in Maine where anglers can enjoy nearly 6,000 lakes and ponds and more than 30,000 miles of rivers and streams. Tomorrow and Sunday any person may fish for free without a license on Maine’s waterways, except those who have had their license suspended or revoked. All other rules and regulations, including bag and possession limits, still apply.
Horseshoe Crab Walk
(Brooksville) Horseshoe crabs are returning to Maine’s Bagaduce River. Blue Hill Heritage Trust postponed their hike last week. Outreach director Chrissy Allen says you can learn about these living fossils during a special hike rescheduled for this Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at Snow Natural Area off of the Young Point Road in Brooksville.
Domestic Violence Terrorizing
(Franklin) A Franklin man faces a slew of charges after allegedly breaking into a home and assaulting a woman. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies responded to a residence on Wednesday where 39-yer-old Damian Pickard allegedly kicked in the door to gain entry. Deputies say Pickard assaulted one woman while disconnecting the phone line so another woman could no longer communicate with a 9-1-1 dispatcher. Pickard fled in a vehicle that wasn’t his. Deputies eventually took Pickard into custody and charged him with Domestic Violence Terrorizing, Obstructing the Report of a Crime, OUI and more.
Sumner Memorial HS Vote
(Sullivan) Residents from the 9 communities served by Regional School Unit 24 will soon decide whether to build a $44-million-dollar school to house middle-and-high school students. If approved by voters on the June 11th ballot, construction would begin next June with the goal of completing the project in time for the 2022 school year. The new structure would be located behind the existing Sumner Memorial High School in Sullivan. The existing building would be demolished in August 2023 and athletic fields would be constructed where the school currently stands. At a recent public hearing the only opposition came from a parent upset the new school would mean middle school grades from several towns would be bussed to Sullivan.
Gouldsboro Police Vote
(Gouldsboro) Voters in Gouldsboro will decide on June 11th whether to disband the local police department and contract with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office instead. The Ellsworth American reports the proposed budget of roughly $209-thousand-dollars for the next fiscal year would pay for 100 hours of coverage by Gouldsboro police. But that amount will only buy about 80 hours a week from the Sheriff’s Department. The Gouldsboro Police Department provides animal control but the county does not. The county would also require the town to set aside $10-thousand-dollars annually for the purchase of new police vehicles.
Summer Meal Program
(Local) Some public schools in Maine will offer the Summer Food Service Program to ensure children get the nutrition they need when school is out. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports the program may be offered in areas of the state where more than 50-percent of the children are eligible for free or reduced meal benefits under the National School Lunch Program. Some of the Washington County sites offering meals this summer include Washington Academy, Eastport Elementary School, Ella Lewis School and the Peninsula School.
