Hermon Woman Sentenced
(Bangor) – A 29-year old Hermon woman will spend 2-years in prison for her role in trying to sell drugs in Penobscot County. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that Erica Oliveira pled guilty last October to conspiracy to distribute heroin, fentanyl and crack. Drug agents say Oliveira and others conspired to bring the drugs from Waterbury Connecticut to her home in Hermon for distribution.
Inmate Dies
(Warren) – Back in 1992 James Young of Bangor was on a fishing trip to Washington County with two other men when he shot and stabbed one of them. A jury convicted Young of murder a year later and a judge sent him to prison for 45-years. He was due to get out in just over a year. Yesterday, prison staffers were attending to Young when he died in prison. He was 69-years old. The Medical Examiner’s Office will try to determine how he died.
Body Found
(Shirley) – A game warden using a search dog found a 66-year old man’s body along the East Branch of the Piscataquis River yesterday. Clayton Burton’s wife reported him missing on Monday. Wardens found his ATV along a railroad bed that runs between Shirley and Blanchard, and the dog located his body yesterday. Burton had left his Blanchard home last Thursday and his wife was out of town for the weekend, returning home on Monday to discover that he’d never returned from the fishing trip.
Bank Robber Pleads Innocent
(Bangor) – A 59-year old Hampden man says he’s not guilty of robbing a Bangor Credit Union. Ronald Tilley appeared in federal court yesterday. Authorities in Connecticut arrested Tilley about a week after he allegedly robbed the Downeast Credit Union in Bangor last March. WABI-TV reports Tilley allegedly threatened to shoot tellers if they didn’t turn over money.
FBC Spring Hike
(Hancock) Frenchman Bay Conservancy encourages folks to get out and explore the preserves around them. Spokesman Austin Schuver says participants joining the guided hike June 1st will meet at Tidal Falls Preserve in Hancock then carpool to a trail in Sullivan. Schuver says plan for around 2 hours of easy hiking and 30 minutes of car travel. Bring water and bug repellent.
American Folk Festival
(Bangor) The American Folk Festival on the Bangor Waterfront will see some minor changes this summer compared to years past. Festival organizer Heather McCarthy tells Star 97-7 one of the most notable differences is the re-location of the Festival’s second largest stage. McCarthy says the changes are prompted by the city of Bangor conducting an overhaul to the sewer system that runs under the railroad stage.
Not Guilty Plea
(Rockland) – A suspected killer from Knox County remains in jail without bail after pleading not guilty to murder yesterday. Police say 37-year old Sarah Richards beat and strangled 83-year old Helen Carver to death in February. Richards worked for Carver to remove snow. The victim had complained to police that she suspected Richards of stealing a debit card. Carver’s family found her body, and police questioned Richards who claimed that she hit Carver in self-defense when the elderly woman supposedly made a threatening move toward her.
Speeding-Endangering Children
(Rockland) An Edgecomb man is held at the Knox County Jail for allegedly driving over 100-miles-per-hour with 2 kids in the car. Police say it’s the second time in two months that Henry Thompson the 3rd has led them on a high-speed chase. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the 33-year-old Thompson was first arrested in April for a chase from Waldoboro to Warren. Bail conditions mandated Thompson must stop for law enforcement, which police say he failed to do on May 18th. He was allegedly clocked going more than 100 miles an hour on Route 1 with a 6 and 7-year-old not properly buckled in the car. Thompson faces numerous charges and is due in court June 27th.
Fatal Crash
(Skowhegan) Skowhegan police say one person died in a head-on crash between a small 4-door passenger car and a Coca Cola tractor trailer. It happened in front of Dudley Corner School House at the intersection of Route 2 a little after 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. The Morning Sentinel reports traffic was temporarily detoured. The victim’s name has not been released.
