Keene Trial
(Ellsworth) – Prosecutors may wrap up their case against a 22-year old Bar Harbor man accused of killing the young woman who gave him a ride home from Logan Airport a year ago. Jurors yesterday viewed gruesome crime scene photos of Mikaela Conley’s badly beaten body over defense attorney objections. The state says Jalique Keene raped and strangled the 19-year old woman then dragged her body into a wooded area behind the Connors-Emerson school complex. The two had attended the same schools, including that one.
Belfast Bridge
(Belfast) – A bridge that carries Route 1 in Belfast over the Goose River declared structurally deficient 5-years ago won’t get replaced any time soon. Village Soup dot-com reports the Maine Department of Transportation has put plans to replace the Goose River Bridge on hold after bids came in much higher than budgeted. Instead, a temporary 2-lane bridge will divert the busy road around the crumbling bridge until a new plan is in place.
Parking Meter Cartoons
(Bar Harbor) It became official yesterday – the new parking meters and kiosks in downtown Bar Harbor are up and running. It’s a subject that’s been a source of contention among many locals. But an artist in Bar Harbor has taken a unique approach by personifying the meters. Linda Rowell Kelley tells Star 97-7 she started sketching the parking meters as people. Linda Rowell Kelley’s whimsical cartoons are posted on her “Citizens for a Better Bar Harbor” Facebook page. She says there have been lively discussions posted about the new parking meters.
Bird Walk
(Hancock) Frenchman Bay Conservancy invites you to welcome spring with a bird walk. Spokesman Austin Schuver says bring your binoculars to Tidal Falls Preserve this Saturday. Schuver says plan for around 2 hours of easy hiking and 30 minutes of round trip travel.
Standoff Shooting
(Auburn) Police say a 6-hour standoff with an armed man in Auburn who told police he had a hostage ended with the man’s death. A State police tactical team member shot and killed 29-year-old Steven Case on Tuesday. Police Chief Jason Moen said they wanted Case for failing to turn himself in to begin serving a 9-month sentence. Police encountered Case on Tuesday and he fled in to an apartment building basement with a woman and with guns. State police say the officer who fired the fatal shot is on leave, and the attorney general’s office is investigating the shooting.
Town Manager Fired
(Orrington) – The town of Orrington is once again in the market for a town manager. Selectmen voted 3-to-2 this week to dismiss current manager Joan Gibson who started on a 6-month probationary term in March. Selectmen did not say why they fired Gibson after holding a job performance review at the previous meeting. She’s the 3rd town manager to leave Orrington in less than a year. Gibson, who is a farmer from Levant, had no prior municipal government experience.
Hep-A Scare
(Caribou) Two Aroostook County healthcare facilities have provided more than 700 vaccines to people who may have been exposed to the Hepatitis A virus in Caribou. The Maine Center for Disease Control reports that people who ate at Burger Boy from April 24th through May 13th could have been exposed to the virus by a restaurant worker. The Maine CDC alerted the public last Friday after confirming the diagnosis. WAGM-TV reports that the time-frame is closing for the vaccine to be effective. Monday is the last day to get vaccinated for those who ate at Burger Boy on May 13th.
RSU 25 Donation
(Bucksport) A couple who graduated from Bucksport High School has pledged to donate $250-thousand-dollars in support of the schools’ initiatives to become a leader in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Andrew Silvernail is from the Class of 1989 and his wife Shelby graduated in 1991. Their donation will fund hiring a new math coach who will serve the entire school system, and will also finance equipment for the industrial arts, trade education, and robotics team. The Silvernail’s reflect fondly on their high school years and say they want to help Bucksport students have the same opportunities to achieve their full potential as they did.
