Cocaine Arrests
(Machias) – Drug agents arrested three people in Machias after seizing crack cocaine and a lot of cash following a search of an apartment building. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency reports to Star 97.7 that they found 64 grams of crack cocaine and $13-thousand dollars in cash after raiding the Main Street apartment building. Charged with drug dealing are 44-year old David Dowling and 36-year old Angela Ward, both of Machias along with a New York City man.
Howland Fatality
(Howland) – An Aroostook County man is dead after he flew out of a vehicle that rolled off the highway in Howland. State Police report to Star 97.7 that 30-year old Ted MacArthur of Fort Fairfield died Saturday evening. He was riding in a Subaru that 30-year old Leslie Greenlaw of Linneus was driving. She drifted off the road, over corrected and spun into the median where the car struck a culvert and flipped. MacArthur was not wearing a seatbelt.
Card Plea
(Bangor) – A Maryland man who admitted to using fake gift cards at Maine stores faces up to 5-years in federal prison and a quarter million dollar fine. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 that 33-year old Bryan Boley pled guilty to conspiracy to use counterfeit cards in Maine. Boley would buy credit card numbers on-line and use those numbers to make the fake cards. Federal agents searched a motel room and came up with lots of cards, then arrested Boley and found 19-more fake cards on him.
Lost Antler Hunter found
(Kokadjo) – A 63-year old Newcastle man is OK after spending hours lost in the woods of Northern Maine. The Maine Warden Service reports to Star 97.7 that they found Gregory Schaefer near 7th Roach Pond Saturday evening. His family said he failed to return from an expedition to find shed moose antlers. Game Wardens heard him shout. They fired gunshots and heard more shouting. After paddling a canoe to the other side of the pond, they found Schaefer and reunited him with his family.
Baileyville Drug Bust
(Baileyville) – Police in Baileyville have charged a 44-year old Baileyville woman with drug trafficking after finding a sizable amount of heroin during a bail check. The police department’s Facebook page says Katherine Haskins had 50-grams of heroin and about $7-thousand dollars in cash when they arrested her this weekend. They’ve also charged 35-year old Melissa Cox of Baileyville with drug possession.
Keene Trial
(Ellsworth) – Jury selection is scheduled to start today in a young Bar Harbor man’s murder trial. Jalique Keene is accused of raping and strangling Mikaela Conley of Bar Harbor just about a year ago. Authorities found her body in the woods behind the Connors-Emerson School in June 2018. Conley had picked up Keene from Logan Airport in Boston after he returned from Europe where he played football. Surveillance cameras at the school allegedly recorded Keene on school grounds the night Conley was killed.
Embezzlement Arrest
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth police arrested a 55-year-old woman accused of embezzling nearly $100-thousand-dollars from the Hancock County Planning Commission. A representative from the non-profit contacted police May 5th reporting a former employee may have taken the money. Detectives investigated ledgers and bank statements and determined almost a hundred-grand was missing. Ellsworth police arrested Sheri Walsh of Newport and charged her with Theft by Unauthorized Taking or Transfer. She made her first court appearance Saturday.
Blood Donations
(Local) The American Red Cross collected over 11-thousand fewer type “O” blood donations this spring than needed to sustain a sufficient blood supply nationwide. The organization is calling on all eligible donors to give the gift of life. Regional spokeswoman Mary Brant says if you are a regular donor, consider bringing a non-donor with you next time to introduce them to the experience. Hancock County blood drives are coming up on May 29th at Deer Isle-Stonington High School, May 30th at Sumner High School, and May 31st at Bucksport High School.
Veteran Movie
(Bucksport) The Alamo Theater in Bucksport will show a feature-length documentary about 2 Iraq veterans as they struggle with depression upon returning home from military service. Fearful of succumbing to the epidemic of veteran suicide, Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson embark on a 2,700-mile walk across America as a way to confront their inner pain. The film called “Almost Sunrise” will play at the Alamo Theater this Thursday night at 6:30. A group discussion precedes the film at 6. Admission is a recommended $5 donation at the door.
Recovery Center Purchase
(Machias) A safe house in Washington County has acquired the deed to the property where it helps men overcome various addictions. The Ellsworth American reports Arise Addiction Recovery opened a residential recovery program with 12 beds in August 2016. The non-profit Recovery Support Network offered Arise the Lincoln Street home under the conditions that Arise pay off the $11-thousand-dollar mortgage then operate the recovery program successfully for three years. Arise director Paul Trovarello tells the newspaper that now having the deed to the property allows them to apply for grants to improve the 100-year-old property. So far 72 men have graduated from the program.
