MDI Middle School
(Bar Harbor) – School officials on Mt. Desert Island have begun discussing whether the island should have one middle school to serve all four towns and the off-island town of Trenton. The Mt. Desert Islander reports that a committee studying middle school options have recommended the single school be located on the same campus as MDI High School. The committee said the current set up with each town offering a K-through-8 program does not provide for equal opportunities. The report also recommends that the island schools offer a Pre-K program.
Manslaughter Plea
(Machias) – A Roque Bluffs man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with a car crash that killed his 10-year old daughter a year and a half ago. Under a plea agreement, 37-year old Christopher Stevenson will spend just 30-days in prison. Stevenson admitted he was on several prescription medications when he was driving on a suspended license and ran into a tree in Cathance Township. His daughter died in the crash.
Benton Drug Arrest
(Benton) – Police think a Massachusetts man got a wrong address and tried to sell drugs at the wrong home this week. Spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 a Benton homeowner called 9-1-1 after 31-year old Tyrone Fleuimont of Roslindale Massachusetts forced his way into the home on Wyman Road. Troopers caught Fleurimont a short ways away and found cocaine and Fentanyl into his vehicle. They also seized more than $3-thousand dollars in cash. Fleurimont is charged with criminal threatening.
Glenburn Road
(Glenburn) – Glenburn residents who live on a dirt road that became impassable earlier this spring learned last night the town cannot repair the private section of road. WABI-TV reports residents were frustrated when the town’s attorney said that the town cannot spend public funds on private roads. Town councilors suggested that residents start a petition and grant an easement to the Town of Glenburn to allow them to repair the muddy road.
Owl’s Head Murder
(Rockland) – A Knox County woman who reportedly admitted to a state police detective that she killed an elderly Owl’s Head woman will appear in court next week. The Bangor Daily News reports 37-year old Sarah Richards of South Thomaston is charged with murdering 83-year old Helen Carver in February. Richards worked for Carver shoveling snow. Carver had reported to the Knox County Sheriff’s Department that she suspected Richards of stealing her debit card.
Pink Tulip & Cancer Stories
(Ellsworth) Several area organizations are hosting events at Donald Little Park in Ellsworth tomorrow. The Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center’s annual Walk for Life is extending to Ellsworth for the first time. It’s also the Ellsworth Garden Club’s plant sale and the Pink Tulip Festival. Breast cancer survivor Stacey Giancarlo Estes started the Pink Tulip Project about 8 years ago. Estes says cancer isn’t a death sentence and there is hope. Festivities for the plant sale and Pink Tulip Festival are from 9 ‘til 2 tomorrow. Walk for Life registration begins at 8:30 at Knowlton Park – contact the Beth Wright Center for details.
Power Outage – Fried Squirrel
(Brewer) 24-hundred utility customers were without power for a short time Thursday morning in Penobscot County. Emera Maine spokeswoman Judy Long says a small woodland creature is to blame for the outage – again. Power was restored in about an hour. Long says the squirrel’s ending was grim.
Measles Health Forum
(Ellsworth) Media outlets across the country have covered stories about measles outbreaks. Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital will share information on vaccines and give an update about measles during their next Community Health Forum. Pediatrician, Carolyn Stwertka will conduct the free talk in the hospital’s classroom next Tuesday at 5:30pm. Staff from Northern Light Pediatrics in Ellsworth will offer free vaccines to children under the age of 18 accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Alaska Cold Case
(Auburn) A Maine man is no longer fighting extradition to Alaska to face charges that he raped and killed a woman there more than 25 years ago. Steven Downs of Auburn is charged with assault and murder in the brutal killing of 20-year-old Sophie Sergie at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1993. The Sun Journal reports Downs has withdrawn a petition contesting extradition. After Downs appearance in court Thursday, Alaska authorities then have 30 days to retrieve him. Downs was a student and Sergie was a former student at the time of her death. The case went cold for years before DNA evidence led to Downs’ arrest in February.
Gear Sale
(Bar Harbor) Great bargains are to be had at tomorrow’s Outdoor Gear Sale and Swap, organized by Friends of Acadia. More than 40 private sellers will offer deals on nearly-new and lovingly-used outdoor equipment and sporting goods from 10 ‘til 2 at MDI High School on Route 233. Among the types of gear slated for sale are new or used tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, skis, snowshoes, fishing and boating items, bicycles, clothing and more. Friends of Acadia will also have information about becoming a member and opportunities to volunteer including working on trails in Acadia National Park.
Nat’l Prevention Week – Friday
(Ellsworth) It’s National Substance Abuse Prevention Week, focusing on major substance use and mental health topics. Today is centered around Preventing Suicide. Healthy Acadia spokeswoman Tara Young says the organization offers suicide prevention training and can customize a presentation to a group’s particular needs. Young says nicotine, alcohol, and drug use by young people are highly correlated with thoughts of suicide and can exacerbate anxiety and depression.
Safe Boating Week
(Augusta) – National Safe Boating Week starts tomorrow. The Maine Warden Service says all people in boats should always wear life jackets and be cognizant that the water is very cold. Safety agencies including the Marine Patrol and US Coast Guard advise boaters to make sure their watercraft has all the required safety gear, working navigation lights, and are registered. Boaters should also let someone know when they are headed out and what their itinerary is. Finally, the Warden Service advises boaters not to drink while on the water.
