Mt. Desert Fire Hose
(Mt. Desert) – The fire chief for the Town of Mt. Desert says it’s time to replace a lot of fire hose. The Mt. Desert Islander reports chief Michael Bender will use $60-thousand dollars to replace the department’s 4-inch, large diameter hose. He said most of that hose is more than 25-years old and about 20-percent of it failed testing in the past year. He said they also plan to replace the 2-and-a-half inch hose inventory.
Rockland School Break-In
(Rockland) – School is open today at the South School in Rockland after a break-in during vacation week damaged a lot of windows. School officials say staff and a local glass company were able to repair the damage to the elementary school. A message sent to parents did advise that the burglars broke into the school nurse’s office and stole prescription medications stored at the school. The message advised parents who have medicines administered by the nurse to send replacement medication to the school today.
Flooding/Muddy Roads
(Undated) – Maine is a soggy mess in places this morning. The Kennebec River has overflowed its banks in Augusta and Hallowell as heavy rains combined with rapid snow melt to put a lot of water into the river. Public works crews erected barricades, closing off several streets. The Mattawamkeag River in Penobscot County also flooded nearby roads. Mud is a problem in some areas. The last mile of Ohio Street in Glenburn is cut off from the world thanks to extreme mud. A tow truck had to pull out a state trooper’s SUV that was responding to an incident there this past weekend.
Bar Harbor Man to Stand Trial
(Bar Harbor) Jury selection will begin next month for a Bar Harbor man accused of raping and killing a former classmate. A plea agreement did not come together Friday during a settlement conference between 21-year-old Jalique Keene’s lawyer and prosecutors. WABI-TV reports both sides will now work to pick a jury on May 20th. Keene is charged with murdering 19-year-old Mikaela Conley last June. Court records say a security camera at a Bar Harbor school shows Keene dragging Conley’s body across the playground to a wooded area where she was later found.
Emera Scam
(Local) Emera Maine is warning customers about an elaborate phone scam targeting residents and small businesses. Spokeswoman Judy Long tells Star 97-7 the scammers call and claim to represent Emera Maine. Long says Emera tries to work out payment plans with customers who are late paying bills, and disconnection is a last resort. If you suspect the person calling you may be a scammer, Long says hang up and call Emera Maine customer service.
Bangor Mall Sale
(Bangor) The Bangor Mall sold in February for a little more than half of the city’s assessed value of the property. Mason Asset Management of New York and 2 other business groups bought the mall during an online auction. The Bangor Daily News reports the company’s president confirmed they paid $12.6-million. The city of Bangor’s assessed value is $24.7-million-dollars. While the reserve for that auction was not met, the new and former mall owners negotiated to close the sale on Tuesday.
Maine Cabin Masters
(Central ME) An increase in viewership has led DIY Network to order 16 more episode of its hit renovation series Maine Cabin Masters. DIY Network reports season 3 of Maine Cabin Masters attracted more than 3 & a half million viewers since its December 3rd premiere. The show stars Chase Morrill, his sister Ashley and Ashley’s husband Ryan as they renovate cabins around the pine tree state while trying to stick to deadlines and budgets.
Computer Virus
(Ellsworth) – Over the last couple of years, a few Maine communities have been hit hard by computer viruses. Augusta had to shut down its city center last week after a virus crippled the computers. In Hancock County, Ellsworth’s information technology director says they have a lot of security in place to try to protect outside computer attacks. He tells Star 97.7 they have a sophisticated backup plan and filtering in place on computers to try to keep viruses out. He said he has built money into the upcoming budget to buy software to train employees on what to look for to avoid computer attacks.
