EHS Students in Paris
(Ellsworth) Students from Ellsworth High School arrived in Paris last Saturday as part of a 12-day arts and language trip. Pilar Burmeister of Ellsworth tells Star 97-7 she breathed a sigh of relief Monday when learning her 17 and 14-year old daughters were safe. Burmeister says it’s a school vacation trip her daughters will never forget.
Counterfeit
(Bangor) – Counterfeit money has started showing up in Bangor. Police department spokesman Wade Betters reports to Star 97.7 that three businesses contacted them after getting fake $50 and $100-dollar bills. Police shared pictures of the fake money, noting Chinese style symbols were on the fakes. He advised business owners to check all $50’s and $100’s before accepting them. He said the fakes are a slightly different size, and if there are multiple bills, they likely have the same serial number.
Protest Planned
(Ellsworth) – If you see protestors tomorrow in Ellsworth, they’re looking to complain about paying income taxes and to sign up members of the Libertarian Party. In a press release sent to Star 97.7 Libertarian officials say even though their party was decertified by the Secretary of State, people can still register to vote in that party. The party says it plans legal action against the state to recover the more than 6-thousand voters who were enrolled as Libertarians that automatically became un-enrolled last November because no candidates received enough support in the Gubernatorial election.
Benefit Dinner
(Ellsworth) The Downeast Family YMCA is planning a benefit dinner for one of their employees who was recently diagnosed with cancer. “Miss Holly” works in the Toddler Program at the Moore Community Center and awaits more testing before a treatment plan is created. The public is invited to a spaghetti supper to help with Miss Holly’s medical expenses. In addition, raffle tickets are being sold for numerous prizes. The spaghetti supper is $5 per person, happening this Thursday night from 5 ‘til 7 at the Moore Community Center in Ellsworth.
Plastic Bag Ban
(Camden) The April 30th deadline to ban the use of plastic bags in Camden has some stores applying for waivers allowing them to use up their existing supplies. Village Soup dot-Com reports the upcoming ban also includes a 10-cent fee for paper bags used at stores selling items like dairy, meat and produce. The referendum was initiated by the Camden Conservation Commission and voters approved the measure on last November’s ballot.
Military Death
BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) – Military officials in South Carolina are investigating the shooting death of a 21-year-old Marine corporal from Standish Maine and say they have another Marine in custody. 21-year-old Cpl. Tyler Wallingford of Standish was shot to death Friday at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina. A spokesman says Cpl. Spencer Daily has been detained in relation to the investigation. Both Marines were aircraft ordinance technicians with the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, based in Beaufort.
Camden – Park Death
(Camden) The state medical examiner’s office is trying to identify a man’s body found in Camden’s Harbor Park during the weekend. The Pen Bay Pilot reports a person walking in the park Saturday morning made the discovery and called the Knox County RCC. Police say the death is not considered suspicious and the public is not in danger.
Take Back the Night
(Machias) The University of Maine Machias is organizing a march and rally to raise awareness about sexual assault. It’s in partnership with the Next Step Domestic Violence Project and the Atlantic Mental Health Center’s Sexual Assault Services. The “Take Back the Night March and Rally” steps off at 6 o’clock this Thursday evening at the Machias Chamber of Commerce and ends at the UMM Performing Arts Center with a speak-out and rally. The evening concludes with a candlelight vigil. A shuttle is available for participants; everyone is welcome.
Bangor Mall Owners
(Bangor) The Bangor Mall will be under new ownership soon. The Bangor Daily News reports 3 real estate investment companies based in Great Neck, New York intend to close on the purchase. The 3 companies are all private and have partnered on nearly 50 other mall and commercial real estate purchases. A Mason Asset Management spokesman would not comment on the price the group paid for the Bangor Mall during an online auction in February. However, the highest bid of $14.95 million-dollars did not meet the reserve.
Accused Baby Killer-Court
(Millinocket) The trial of a Millinocket man charged with killing a 6-month-old-boy is set to begin this week. Jesse Mackin pleaded not guilty in 2016 after being indicted in the death of Larry Lord Jr., who was his girlfriend’s son. The evidence will be heard by a judge, not a jury, at Mackin’s request.
