Murder/Suicide
(Presque Isle) – A man and a child are dead in what state police call a murder/suicide in Presque Isle. Spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that troopers and the tactical team responded to the Reach Road in Presque Isle late Saturday night. A negotiating team was also called in. Troopers entered the home early Sunday morning and found the man and child dead inside. Identities will likely be released after an autopsy planned for today.
Porn Sentences
(Bangor) – Two men from Old Town will face a long time in prison and a lifetime of supervised release on child porn charges. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97.7 that 52-year old Patrick Monahan was sentenced to 35-years and 47-year old Kenneth McLay to 20-years. Judge John Woodcock told both men that they were incorrigible and could not stop themselves, and the only way to stop was to have society stop them. Both men pled guilty to child porn charges last September.
Sumner – No School
(Sullivan) – There is no school today at Sumner High School in Sullivan. The reason – too many students and staff are sick. The school department reported to parents last night that they couldn’t find enough substitute teachers today to carry on classes. All the rest of the schools in RSU 24 are open today, and Sumner High plans to reopen tomorrow.
Thorndike Fire Dept.
(Thorndike) – Voters in the Waldo County town of Thorndike have decided to create a municipally run fire department after all but one firefighter resigned last month. The outfit that had provided fire protection in Thorndike was a private corporation designated to provide fire protection. Nearly the entire fire department resigned in protest after neighboring departments wrote to municipal officials about poor practices. By voting to become a municipal department, the Selectmen in Thorndike will appoint a municipal fire chief, and the budget will be under town supervision.
Pepper Spray
(Bangor) – Theater goers may have gotten more than expected this weekend in Bangor. The Penobscot Theater Company says a canister that was supposed to contain water may have actually contained pepper spray when it was discharged during a show. The liquid is being tested by police agencies. The Theater Company says it will offer patrons a chance to see the show Ripcord again for free. No long term health effects are likely from the discharge.
Library Open House
(Ellsworth) Newcomers to the city of Ellsworth are invited to an open house at the public library. The 2nd annual event is put-on in collaboration with the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Ellsworth. Community engagement librarian Abby Morrow says the Open House is a chance to learn more about the community. The open house, welcoming newcomers and neighbors, is on Wednesday afternoon from 4 ‘til 6 at the library in downtown Ellsworth.
Shooting Death
(Swanville) A Morrill man is charge following fatal shooting outside a home in Swanville early Friday morning. State police and the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office investigated and arrested 22-year-old Austin McDevitt. He’s held at Two Bridges Jail charged for the murder of 26-year-old Shane Sauer of Belfast. Police say the shooting happened on Oak Hill Road around 4:45 Friday morning.
Farm Name Change
(Bucksport) A Hancock County farm must change its name to avoid a law suit. Kevin and Mandy Wheaton tell the Bangor Daily News they didn’t know anyone would have a problem with them naming their Bucksport farm “Hobbit Hill Homestead.” The couple received an email from Middle-earth Enterprises, which warned them that the company owned the rights to terms from author J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.” Wheaton says they have since picked a new name: Wheaton Mountain Farm.
Damages Awarded
(Portland) – A former Gouldsboro man has won $1-point-8 million dollars in compensation after a false rape conviction. Vladek Filer had already reached a $375-thousand dollar settlement with an insurance company representing prosecutors and police. His ex-wife had accused Filer of sexually assaulting her during a child custody battle. In a retrial he was subsequently cleared of the charged, and an assistant D-A in Hancock County was punished for prosecutorial misconduct.
