Alleged Dog Killer Arrested
(Ellsworth) – One of two men accused of brutally killing his boss’s dog in Winter Harbor last summer now faces domestic violence charges. The Ellsworth American reports 37-year old Nathan Burke was in jail yesterday for allegedly pushing his girlfriend causing her to land on top of her daughter and injuring the child. Burke is also accused of damaging the woman’s cell phone so that she could not call police. Burke and 22-year old Justin Chipman are accused of killing the dog named Franky last summer. The dog’s body washed ashore on property owned by District Attorney Matthew Foster.
Midcoast Ambulance
(Camden) – Four towns in the mid-coast area may form their own ambulance service. Camden, Rockport, Lincolnville and Hope all hire Northeast Mobile Health Services which is based in Scarborough. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the four towns would work with the Rockland Fire Department’s EMS Services in the joint venture. The complex plan would house ambulances in Camden and West Rockport and end the contract with the private EMS Service. The ambulances would be laid out in the same configuration as the Rockland rigs. Town leaders will discuss the proposal at upcoming meetings.
Summer Camp Assault
(Brooksville) – A Florida couple has filed a federal lawsuit against a Brooksville summer camp following what they say was a sexual assault against their son by 3-other campers. The Bangor Daily News reports the parents are suing Robin Hood Camp for $75-thousand dollars for downplaying the incident as horseplay. The lawsuit claims the camp never reported the attack to the state. An attorney for Robin Hood Camp denies there was an inappropriate response.
Sexual Assault
(Rockland) A Rockland man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy. The alleged assault took place in Rockland on Saturday. An investigation led to the arrest of 37-year-old Richard Squires. The Rockland Police Department reports to Star 97.7 the youngster’s parents took him to the hospital which began the investigation.
Probation Violation
(Biddeford) Maine state police say a Biddeford man with a nationwide warrant for his arrest is now held at the York County Jail. Troopers searched Biddeford homes Monday and spoke to residents who had recently seen 47-year-old Jamison Snyder. That led them to a second floor apartment on Main Street where a woman delayed opening the door for police saying she needed to get dressed first. An officer on scene observed Snyder escaping out a window. Officers tried arresting him on the ground but he allegedly refused and was tased. Police say they found Snyder in possession of a baggy of drugs and cash. He was held at Maine Medical Center then transported to jail.
Alaska Cold Case
(Auburn) An Auburn man charged with killing a woman nearly 26 years ago in Alaska intends to contest extradition. 44-year-old Steven Downs made his intentions known yesterday in his first court appearance since his arrest last Friday. A judge ordered Downs held without bail. He’s charged in the 1993 death of 20-year-old Sophie Sergie in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Alleged Killer to Appeal
(Augusta) A Fairfield man sentenced to 55-years in prison for killing his wife is expected to appeal his conviction in 2 weeks. Last April, jurors found 35-year-old Luc Tieman guilty in the death of 34-year-old Valerie Harmon Tieman. Police found her body in a shallow grave behind his parent’s Fairfield home in August 2016. WABI-TV reports Luc Tieman first told police his wife disappeared at the local Wal-Mart then changed his story to say she died from a drug overdose. An autopsy determined his wife died of gunshot wounds to the head.
Playground Grant
(Ellsworth) Kids Peace has received a $5-thousand-dollar grant to make playground improvements at their Graham Lake campus in Ellsworth. The money was given by the Doug Flutie Junior Foundation for Autism based in Massachusetts. The gift allows Kids Peace to add a wide variety of playground equipment for youth to play and interact with each other.
Final Cabinet Confirmation
(Augusta) Maine’s Senate has confirmed the governor’s final cabinet nominee who will lead the department that oversees agriculture. The Senate on Tuesday unanimously confirmed Amanda Beal, who’s served as president of the Maine Farmland Trust since 2016. The Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry last week unanimously voted to advance Beal’s nomination. Beal pledges to responsibly manage the state’s forests. She grew up on a dairy farm in Litchfield. Beal would be the first woman to head the department, taking over for Walter Whitcomb.
