Aroostook County Crash
(Cyr Plt) – Winds blowing lots of loose snow over Route 1 in Aroostook County created a whiteout, making it impossible for drivers to see anything. In Cyr Plantation, an 11-vehicle pileup is blamed on the whiteout. The Police Chief in Van Buren was first to arrive on scene. While he was outside his cruiser, a vehicle struck and injured him badly. He had to crawl out of the way of another truck headed toward him to avoid a 2nd hit. State Police tell Star 97.7 his injuries are not life-threatening. Among the vehicles involved were the Van Buren police cruiser and two MDOT plow trucks.
Woodland – More Land
(Ellsworth) – The Woodlawn Museum complex in Ellsworth has added 64-more acres of land to its holdings. A press release from the Hancock County Trustees for Public Reservations says Ellsworth resident Persis Ray donated the wooded lot off Westwood Hills. The land is adjacent to the Woodlawn holdings. Executive Director Josh Torrence called the land donation important to the Museum.
Linnehan Homes
(Ellsworth) – Maine’s attorney general’s office received complaints from the Ellsworth area from people who said they thought they were buying homes, but were really paying rent in a complex rent-to-own agreement. As a result, the AG’s office has entered an agreement with Linnehan Homes to re-word agreements and refund some consumers who lost money when they withdrew from the rent-to-own plan. Owner John Linnehan Junior has said he had no problem making the wording change. The rent-to-own plan was mainly utilized by people who had trouble getting a traditional bank mortgage because of low credit scores.

The workshop is this Saturday from 1 to 3 at the Seed Barn on Falls Bridge Road in Blue Hill.
Blood Drives
(Local) A donation shortfall over the holidays has prompted the American Red Cross to issue an emergency call for blood and platelet donors. The organization collected more than 27-thousand fewer blood and platelet donations the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s than needed to sustain a sufficient blood supply. All eligible donors, especially platelet donors and blood donors with type O blood, are urged to give in the coming days. A blood drive is planned at the American Legion in Southwest Harbor on Monday from Noon to 5. Another one is scheduled for next Thursday at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine from 1 to 7 PM.
