Drug Bust
(Bangor) – Four men face drug trafficking charges after an early morning raid in Bangor yesterday. Maine Drug Enforcement Agency commander Darrell Crandall reports to Star 97.7 that agents and Bangor police raided a Grant Street apartment. They found crack cocaine, heroin and cash. Agents arrested apartment dweller Bert Overlock and three others inside the building with him. Crandall said the drugs seized were worth just under $25-hundred dollars.
Coast Guard – Pot Luck Supper
(SW Harbor) – A pot luck supper in Southwest Harbor will help to raise money to assist Coast Guard families who are not getting paid during the partial government shutdown. The Coast Guard is one of several agencies with workers considered essential, but who are not getting paychecks. The supper is set for the American Legion in Southwest Harbor on Saturday the 26th from 5 to 10 PM. Community members from Mt. Desert Island are organizing the pot-luck supper and open mic night.
Clifton Death
(Clifton) Maine’s medical examiner will perform an autopsy on a woman’s body discovered in a Clifton home early yesterday morning. The state police major crimes van spent much of the day at the scene on Route 9 in the Penobscot County town. Police have not released any information about the death reported just after 5:30 in the morning Monday.
Boat Operator Indicted
(Wiscasset) – A fatal boating accident on Damariscotta Lake last August has led to manslaughter and other charges against a Massachusetts man. The Pen Bay Pilot reports a grand jury in Lincoln County indicted 45-year old Jonathan Roberts of Massachusetts on three charges, including manslaughter. Roberts was allegedly operating a boat on the lake at high speed when it struck 32-year old Kristen McKellar of Camden who was swimming in the lake. The collision killed her. Roberts is scheduled to appear in court at the end of this month.
Blood Drives
(Local) A donation shortfall over the holidays has prompted the American Red Cross to issue an emergency call for blood and platelet donors. The organization collected more than 27-thousand fewer blood and platelet donations the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s than needed to sustain a sufficient blood supply. All eligible donors, especially platelet donors and blood donors with type O blood, are urged to give in the coming days. A blood drive will be held today (1/15) at VFW Post 109 in Ellsworth from Noon to 5. Another one is scheduled Friday at Marshall Health Care in Machias from Noon to 5. DVA Arrest
(Monroe) State police have arrested a Monroe man wanted in connection with a domestic violence assault that occurred on New Year’s Day. Police responded to a home on the Ellis Road where a victim suffered non-life threatening injuries. The suspect fled before officers arrived. Police found 27-year-old Brian Hybers Sunday at the Monroe home where the incident happened. He faces several charges and is held at the Waldo County Jail without bail.
Puppy Bowl Contestant
(Portland) Once again a dog from Maine will appear in this year’s Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet. “Flora” is a pit bull-boxer mix from the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland who arrived there in August from a Georgia-based rescue. Flora went to New York City last fall to compete on Team Fluff, and has since been adopted. The 15th annual Puppy Bowl is Sunday, February 3rd at 3 PM on Animal Planet.
Chamber – Open House
(Blue Hill) The Blue Hill Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has launched new winter series called “A Cabin Fever Reliever – Business Open House” – It gives members a chance to open their doors and invite the public in to learn more about what they do. Chamber vice president and Blue Hill Heritage Trust outreach director Chrissy Allen says BHHT will be the first to welcome visitors tomorrow afternoon (on 1/16) from 4:30 to 6:30. Blue Hill Heritage Trust is located at 157 Hinckley Ridge Road in Blue Hill.
Dam Licensing Update
(Ellsworth) A conservation group will hold a public meeting this evening to update locals on the status of the Union River dam’s relicensing progress. The Ellsworth American reports the Downeast Salmon Federation and the Friends of Graham Lake will explain how people can stay involved with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s review of the application by dam owner Black Bear Hydro Partners. The public meeting is tonight at 6 at the Ellsworth Public Library.
Salmon Farm
(Bucksport) The developer of a salmon farm in Bucksport is locked in a dispute with a Belfast resident who’s trying to stop the project. Whole Oceans LLC has filed a motion with the state Board of Environmental Protection to try to dismiss a complaint from Holly Faubel, of Belfast, about the proposed salmon farm in Bucksport. The Bangor Daily News reports Faubel has appealed a wastewater discharge permit issued by state regulators. Whole Oceans’ filing states that Faubel doesn’t have the standing to oppose the permit because she lives about 14 miles away from the project site. The indoor salmon farm is scheduled for construction at the site of the former Verso paper mill in Bucksport.
Baby Dies
(Waterboro) A 10-month-old baby who was critically injured in a crash last week has died. The accident happened on January 10th in Waterboro, badly injuring infant Gabrielle Kennedy. Kennedy was a passenger in her mother’s SUV when it was hit from behind a box truck while attempting to make a left turn. The family released a statement saying Gabrielle died as a result of her injuries on Monday at Maine Medical Center in Portland. The baby’s mother, 37-year-old Ellen Kennedy, of Sanford, suffered minor injuries. The driver of the truck, 53-year-old Rene Romero of Lynn, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated driving to endanger.
Trade Show
(Augusta) Maine’s annual trade show for farmers, food producers and agriculture workers is set to take place this week in the state’s capital. The 78th Annual Maine Agricultural Trades Show runs tomorrow thru Thursday at the Augusta Civic Center. The show includes more than 100 exhibits about agriculture products, services and gear.
