Car Deer Crashes
(SW Harbor) – Police in Hancock County says the number of car/deer accidents seems to rising. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the police chief in Southwest Harbor had to order more deer tags this year to issue to people who take deer carcasses away from accident scenes. Rarely is there a day that goes by without a deer accident report by some police agency in the county. Deputies with the Hancock County Sheriffs Department say they don’t track car/deer crashes specifically, but they seem to have increased this past fall.
Waldoboro Apartment Fire
(Waldoboro) – Firefighters in Waldoboro responded to an apartment house fire last evening. The blaze on Marble Avenue was reported just before 5:30 last night. Firefighters and equipment from Cushing, Warren and Thomaston joined the Waldoboro department on the scene. Village Soup dot-com reports the only resident home in the 6-unit complex reported he heard an explosion and flames were shooting from a clothing dryer in the complex. No word on any injuries, or the extent of damage.
Penobscot Language Book
(Indian Island) Two women are trying to save the Penobscot Nation’s native language. Tribe member Carol Dana collaborated with University of Maine Professor Margo Lukens to pen the book titled “They Remember Me Still”. Lukens says the Penobscot language is at risk of extinction because of strong attempts to kill it in previous decades. The University of Massachusetts Press will publish the book, along with online audio recordings from Dana and other Penobscot speakers. Conor Quinn, the only linguist specializing in Penobscot language, also helped them with translation of the original collection of tales, published in 1918.
Robbery Arrest
(Bangor) – Police captured an alleged bank robber in Ellsworth hours after he reportedly held up a bank in Bangor. Transient 27-year old Timothy Myers is charged with two Bangor bank robberies. Bangor police tell Star 97.7 that Myers allegedly held up a TD Bank branch on Stillwater Avenue a week ago and a Key Bank branch on Bangor Mall Boulevard on Wednesday. With help from the Ellsworth police and Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, officers captured Myers hours after the Wednesday hold-up.
Christmas Beating
(Warren) No one’s been charged yet in a Christmas Day altercation in which several people were assaulted in Knox County. Deputies were called to a home on Beechwood Street in Warren late Tuesday evening. The Pen Bay Pilot reports several people were injured; one male was bleeding and another person hit with a blunt weapon. Several people fled before deputies arrived including the alleged suspect, who police have yet to catch up with.
Sobriety Checkpoint
(Ellsworth) It’ll be a long holiday weekend for some folks who don’t have to work on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day next Monday and Tuesday. For anyone who may be celebrating early, the Ellsworth Police Department will conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint tomorrow night beginning at 9. The effort is funded by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety OUI Enforcement Grant. Ellsworth PD says find a sober ride and have a safe holiday weekend.
Mills’ Cabinet
(Augusta) Maine Democratic Governor-elect Janet Mills has tapped a state broadband official as her economic development chief. Mills announced Thursday she’s nominating Connect-ME Authority Director Heather Johnson as Maine’s next Department of Economic and Community Development commissioner. Mills says Johnson will work to see that Maine and its rural areas prosper. The Legislature’s new Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Commerce Committee and the Maine Senate will consider her nomination.
PD Money to Road Repairs
(Pittsfield) Officials in Pittsfield will meet next week to discuss a contested plan to use $130-thousand on road repairs instead of police department improvements. The Kennebec Journal reports the Mayor of Pittsfield cancelled a special meeting that was scheduled for Wednesday because the council didn’t have a quorum. Officials originally planned to use the funds to hire new staff and give police Chief Pete Bickmore a raise.
