Community Center Building
(Ellsworth) – Ellsworth city councilors have referred an effort to stop demolition of the former Ellsworth Falls Community Center back to the city’s Appeals Board. Webber Energy which bought the deteriorating building many years ago got a permit to demolish the building. Neighbors objected, saying Webber was obligated to maintain what they call a historic structure. The Appeals Board referred the neighbors to the city council. The Ellsworth American reports the city council said the Appeals Board should decide on the request to rescind permission to demolish the building.
Fisher Fire
(Rockland) – For a 5th time in a little over a year, firefighters responded to Fisher Engineering in Rockland. Five departments rushed to the scene yesterday when smoke filled the building. It turned out to be a dust collection system that caught fire. Sprinklers activated and firefighters wearing air packs crawled into the building to put out the fire. No injuries are reported. The Pen Bay Pilot reports a mechanical problem is blamed.
Grief & Loss
(Local) Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County offers a number of support groups next month that address various types of losses including suicide, and the death of a spouse or partner. Spokeswoman Janice Ronco says everyone grieves differently, but a friend or family member becoming withdrawn or having a hard time getting out of bed, may mean it’s time to delicately intervene. Free support groups are offered next month in Ellsworth and Blue Hill, as well as a workshop about Aging and Loss. To pre-registers call Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County.
Felon with Gun
(Bangor) – A guilty plea from a Trenton man could land him in prison for up to 10-years. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that 53-year old Timothy Levesque admitted that he had guns on board his boat last May when the Coast Guard conducted a routine safety check off Lamoine State Park. Levesque is a convicted drug felon and is barred from having guns. In addition to prison time, Levesque faces up to a quarter million dollar fine.
Crash Lawsuit
AUBURN, Maine (AP) – A couple injured in a 2017 crash that killed two others during a Maine charitable motorcycle ride is suing the family of the motorcyclist they say caused the chain-reaction crash. A lawsuit filed in Androscoggin County Superior Court by Torri McGraw and Trevor Proctor claims 25-year-old Aaron White-Sevigny caused the crash during the United Bikers Toy Run along Interstate 95 in Augusta. The couple says they suffered cuts caused from sliding on the road as a result of the crash.
Checking on Neighbors
(Augusta) The Maine Emergency Management Agency recommends using the holidays as an excuse to say hello to neighbors – and at the same time, you might discover a neighbor who needs a little extra help getting through the winter. MEMA says it’s not just a “feel-good” thing. Research shows that community ties help towns and neighborhoods bounce back from any emergency.
Sheriff’s Ceremony
(Belfast) The Sheriff in Waldo County will soon take the Oath of Office for his fourth time. A public swearing-in ceremony for Sheriff Jeffrey Trafton is planned for January 4th at the Sheriff’s Office in Belfast. Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
