Newport Shooting
(Newport) – Two men who know each other got into a fight outside a convenience store in Newport last evening. It ended when one of them shot the other at least twice. WABI-TV reports the gunshots hit the victim in the abdomen and leg. Police have not released either man’s name yet. The alleged shooter was in custody, but no charges filed by late last night. Investigators say the public did not appear to be in any danger during the fight.
Data Breach
(Eastport) – A data breach may have exposed a lot of people in Washington County with release of personal information. AOS 77 says it sent letters to a couple thousand people about the data breach in its computer system. The Superintendent of Schools tells WABI-TV that hackers may have accessed names, addresses, birthdates and social security numbers of staff members, but no student data was accessed.
Golden – Staff
(Blue Hill) – Congressman elect Jared Golden has started to hire staff, even though the 2nd Congressional District race is still being recounted. George Stevens Academy graduate Aisha Woodward will be Golden’s chief of staff. Woodward served as Senator Angus King’s Deputy Campaign manager and worked as a policy advisor for King for many years.
Indictments
(Ellsworth) – A grand jury has indicted a Bucksport woman and her nephew on drug charges. The Ellsworth America reports 54-year old Kimberly Matlack and her 45-year old nephew Jamie allegedly operated a methamphetamine making operation. Drug agents raided their Noel Way apartment in September. During the raid, agents evacuated other apartment house dwellers. Both are charged with aggravated meth lab operations.
So. Thomaston Administrator
(South Thomaston) – A Rockport man will become South Thomaston’s next town administrator. The Knox County town hired Owen Casas to replace current administrator Terry Baines who is taking a job in another community. Casas has experience as a state legislator and was a Selectman in Rockport. He’s currently the chairman of the Mid-Coast Solid Waste Corporation.
Justice for Franky
(Ellsworth) The two men accused of kidnapping and brutally killing a family dog from Winter Harbor are due in court this morning. Nathan Burke and Justin Chipman face several charges stemming after the highly publicized August death of Franky the pug. Protestors plan to stand outside the Ellsworth Courthouse. Organizer Becky Sutherland who manages the Facebook page “Justice for Franky” says about 35 people are expected to be there today. Sutherland reminds everyone it is a peaceful protest.
Christmas Trees
(Ellsworth) The sales of live Christmas trees are reportedly down for most sellers in the area. But Newland Nursery owner Steve Elliott tells Star 97-7 that his business seems to be “on pace” for this time of year. Social media posts and articles about trees harboring bugs probably aren’t helping the Christmas tree industry. Elliott says he disagrees with that notion that trees are worse to have in your home than regular plants. Elliott says when keeping a freshly cut tree properly watered you can maintain it through the holiday season.
Drug Arrests
(Dedham) Drug agents arrested three people following a traffic stop for speeding on Route 1A in Dedham. A state trooper pulled over the vehicle Tuesday morning and discovered all 3 occupants had bail conditions. A search of the car turned up methamphetamine, heroin, and drug paraphernalia. Facing several charges are the driver, 48-year-old Stephen Wood, and passengers 38-year-old Timothy Hannan and 27-year-old Diadema Rand, both of Bangor.
