Campground Sold
(Trenton) – A young Southwest Harbor man has purchased a popular campground in Trenton. Colton Sanborn now owns the Timberland Acres campground, purchasing it from the Awalt family as the facility closed for the winter this month. The Ellsworth American reports the 23-year old’s family owns campgrounds on Mt. Desert Island. The 35-acre campground has 200-campsites.
County Charter
(Mt. Desert) – Town officials from a number of Hancock County Communities will explore once again whether it makes sense to encourage a county charter. The county government currently operates under generic state law, which includes electing several officials, including the county treasurer. There is no one on the ballot for the position, though Pamela Linscott has declared as an official write-in candidate. The League of Towns discussed recommending to County Commissioners to form a county charter committee and will spend the next few months identifying issues that should be addressed.
Meth Maker Sentenced
(Unity) – A confessed meth lab operator will spend the next 3-and-a-half years in prison. WABI-TV reports 36year old Thomas Haeberlin of Unity pled guilty earlier this year. Drug agents got tipped off when one of Haeberlin’s children spoke of his potions room and saw Haeberlin wearing a gas mask. They raided his home in Unity and found a hidden room where ten meth making jugs were cooking the drug. Police returned a couple weeks later and again caught Haeberlin making the drug again.
Monroe Contractor Arrested
(Monroe) – State police have charged a plumbing and heating contractor with theft by deception by claiming to have completed work that was never done. Troopers handcuffed 48-year old David Webber of Monroe, charging him with taking $170-thousand dollars for the work. Webber doesn’t hold any professional licenses. Customers started complaining several months ago. Detectives investigated and found a lot of incomplete work for which customers paid.
Baby Sitter Charged
(Bangor) – A young woman who was supposed to be baby sitting two children but instead was found wandering around a Bangor neighborhood nude from the waist down has entered not guilty pleas to child endangerment. Lauren Gelinas told police she drank vodka and left the children home alone. The children, ages 2-and-4, were found at their home. One was asleep, the other was lying in vomit. One of the children told police that Gelinas had kicked them.
Drug Take-Back
(Ellsworth) – It’s another prescription drug take back weekend across Maine. Several areas will have police on hand to properly collect unused pills. Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane says it’s important not to leave unwanted medications lying around the house.
