ATV Fatality
(Carthage, ME) – An ATV accident in Western Maine has left a young Massachusetts man dead. The Maine Warden Service reports to Star 97.7 that 27-year old Taylor Curtin of Belchertown died when the ATV he’d borrowed from a fellow camper in Carthage went airborne and hit a tree. Curtin did not wear a helmet and died at the scene. Warden investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
Branch – Crash
(Warren) – Firefighters cut a 20-year old Warren man from his wrecked truck and a Lifeflight helicopter flew him to a Lewiston hospital in critical condition after a bizarre crash. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department reports to Star 97.7 that a branch fell from a tree Friday onto the cab of the truck that Cameron Martin drove on Route 131. It crushed the cab, knocked Martin unconscious and the truck veered off the road and into a house.
Tannery Cleanup
(Hancock) – An old tannery in Hancock that has sat idle for decades while pollutants sat inside is getting cleaned up. The Ellsworth American reports the Environmental Protection Agency funded the initial stage of cleanup from inside the building, including remnants of the leather tanning process, asbestos wrapped around pipes and PCBs. The tannery opened in the 1950s and operated for about 20-years before the property was finally abandoned in the 1990s. The first stage of the cleanup cost about $370-thousand dollars.
Bus Record
(Bar Harbor) – The bus service that operates on Mt. Desert Island during the summer tourist season set yet another new record when it stopped operations 2-weeks ago. The Island Explorer buses carried more than 620-thousand passengers in 2018, up about 40-thousand from the previous year which had set a record. The Mt. Desert Islander reports bus officials credit great weather and an improved economy for the jump in ridership. Increased visitation to Acadia National Park and lots of cruise ship visits added to the numbers.
Governor Poll
(Bangor) – The latest political poll on the race for Maine Governor shows the Democratic nominee with about an 8-point lead. WABI-TV reports the Pan Atlantic poll had 44-percent of likely voters favoring current Attorney General Janet Mills while 36-percent favored body shop owner Shawn Moody. The same poll had the two in a dead heat in August. The poll shows about 10-percent undecided, and a margin of error of just over 4-percent. Moody’s campaign called the poll inaccurate.
Splash Pad
(Ellsworth) – The splash pad at Knowlton Park in Ellsworth used considerably less water this summer than the previous year. The Bangor Daily News reports water usage fell by 230-thousand gallons. The fountain is activated on days when the temperature is above 65-degrees and weight sensors are activated near the water fountains. The pad still went through about 3-point-1 million gallons of water. City officials estimate it cost about $200-dollars a year to treat the water which drains into Leonard’s Lake.
