Police Shooting
(Bangor) – A 40-year old Bangor man wounded by a police officer this week now faces charges. The Bangor Police Department tells Star 97.7 that Brian Barker is charged with domestic violence terrorizing. Officer Dylan Hall shot and wounded Barker this week while responding to a domestic violence call. Police say Barker refused to put down his gun when ordered to do so, and that’s when Hall shot Barker.
Kitten Recovering
(Winterport) – A kitten rescued from the roadside after someone threw it from a moving car in Winterport is recovering from a broken leg and other mistreatment. The Bangor Daily News reports a school bus driver picked up the 8-week old kitten named Hiccup on October 3rd after children on the bus saw it beside the Monroe Road. Veterinarians say the kitten was emaciated and had fleas and a broken leg. He’s already adopted and is expected to recover.
Health & Wellness Event
(Ellsworth) The Many Roads to Recovery health and wellness event will offer resources and information to folks in all stages of addiction recovery. Families are welcome to explore food, music, children’s activities, and hands-on demonstrations. Healthy Acadia volunteer Brenda Cartwright is one of 4 women in long-term recovery who have put together the health and wellness fair. Cartwright says the event features two keynote speakers. The event is Saturday from 10 ‘til 4 at the Moore Community Center in Ellsworth.
Ferry Terminal Lease
(Bar Harbor) – The high speed ferry known as the Cat will return to Bar Harbor after about 10-years operating out of Portland. The Town Council in Bar Harbor approved most parts of a lease of the ferry terminal the town purchased from the State which Bay Ferries Limited had abandoned after the move to Portland. Bay Ferries will do about $3-million dollars worth of work to the terminal and pay the town $200-thousand dollars a year to lease the facility. While the town council vote was unanimous, opponents said the town should use the ferry terminal as a park and marina.
Carillo Case
(Stockton Springs) – A Stockton Springs couple accused of beating their 10-year old daughter to death may face trial together, but with separate juries. WABI-TV reports prosecutors have requested Sharon and Julio Carillo go on trial in the same courtroom so that both juries hear the same evidence. The Carillos supposedly confessed to beating their daughter Marissa Kennedy over a several month period before her death last winter. They allegedly waited hours before calling an ambulance after the child became unresponsive.
More Wind
(Local) Emera Maine linemen are preparing for more high winds after Tuesday’s damaging winds cut power to more than 15-thousand customers throughout northern and eastern Maine. Forecasters say wind gusts today could reach 45-miles per hour. Elevated winds can bring down trees and branches, leading to power outages. Emera reminds folks to never touch a downed power line or tree making contact with a line, and never drive over downed wires.
Professor Barred
(Portland) The University of Southern Maine has barred a professor from teaching a one credit course she organized for students to protest Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins as she considered then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The Portland Press Herald reports the University’s president revealed that Dr. Susan Feiner set up “an unauthorized class that advanced her personal political agenda.” Feiner has been banned from teaching at any campus in the University of Maine System.
Assistant Principal’s Conference
(Rockland) The Maine Principal’s Association is gearing up for the Assistant Principal’s Conference. This year’s theme is “Back To The Future” and features guest presenter Kim Marshall. Marshall spent 32 years as principal in Boston Public Schools and now teaches courses and workshops on instructional leadership. The 3-day conference begins this Sunday at the Samoset Resort in Rockland.
