Suspicious Letter
(Bangor) – A scare on West Broadway in Bangor yesterday afternoon is over. A suspicious letter arrived at Senator Susan Collins’ home. Bangor Police tell Star 97.7 they sent officers and a haz mat team over after Collins family opened the letter purporting to contain the deadly poison Ricin. Federal haz mat teams removed the letter and sent it for testing. No one is hurt and the Senator was able to return home by 9PM.
Power/Wind
(Lamoine) – Linemen for Emera Maine are battling gusty winds this morning to try to restore a mounting number of outages. Spokeswoman Judy Long reports to Star 97.7 that more than 95-hundred homes and businesses lost power as the heavy winds brought down limbs and entire trees on lines, knocking out the power. Especially hard hit were Deer Isle and Stonington along with the Howland area. Central Maine Power reports more than 54-thousand outages this morning.
Drug Dealers
(Bangor) – A 57-year old Newport man will spend 15-years in federal prison for dealing drugs. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that agents caught Jamie Akerson with more than a kilogram of heroin between May 2015 and January 2016. He and another man conspired to acquire large quantities of the drug on a weekly basis from out of state. Meanwhile, a Hermon woman admitted that she conspired to sell crack cocaine, heroin and fentanyl. Erica Oliveira faces up to 20-year in prison and a million dollar fine.
Ellsworth – Expulsions
(Ellsworth) – School officials in Ellsworth will decide whether to expel a pair of students after a pair of threats a day apart last week. The Bangor Daily News reports a 17-year old boy threatened to shoot up the high school, and another student overheard his plans. Police determined he could not carry out the crime because he had no access to guns. A second student set off a fire cracker inside the auditorium the next day. Because both are juveniles, police have not released their names.
Drug Sentence
(Sidney) A Sidney man will spend 3-and-a-half years in prison for selling drugs in Central Maine. Court records say that for nearly two years 32-year-old Derek Blake conspired with others to acquire heroin and crack from New York to bring back to his home and sell. Blake served as the “middle-man” for drug deals, introduced dealers to customers in the area, and provided transportation for the dealers and their drugs.
Project Hope
(Ellsworth) Healthy Acadia and the Ellsworth Police Department continue offering support to anyone in the area who’s ready to kick their addiction. Healthy Acadia spokeswoman Denise Black says Project Hope can be a person’s first step in the recovery process. Project Hope operates out of the Ellsworth police department each Tuesday from 8 AM to 4 PM.
Plastic Bag Forum
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth area residents can attend a panel discussion on a draft ordinance to ban single use plastic bags. Several communities in Maine have already banned plastic bags from their local grocery and retails stores. The free forum in Ellsworth will discuss how the ordinance could affect local businesses. The session is planned for the Moore Community Center this Thursday morning from 8 to 9:30.
Phone Scam
(Augusta) The Department of Health and Human Services is warning Mainers that, if you receive a call from DHHS asking for your social security number and birth date – it’s not them. Most of the scam calls have targeted folks in the southern Maine region. DHHS says they never call to ask for personal information.
Man Still Missing
(Oxford Cty) The Maine Warden Service is asking hunters in the towns of Waterford, Stoneham and Harrison to be on the lookout for a man who’s been missing since October 5th. 49-year-old Ricky Howard of Waterford was last seen that day at AJ’s Everything Store in Stoneham. His vehicle was located on private property two days later. Howard is 6-feet tall, weighs about 160-pounds, and has blue eyes and brownish-gray hair. Anyone who spots Howard should call the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
Child Abuse
(Skowhegan)- Police say a New Hampshire man is charged with physically abusing a 2-year-old girl in Maine. 25-year-old Cody Swanson was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated assault. Police say the child’s mother told first responders Thursday her daughter had fallen down steps at an apartment complex in Skowhegan. Investigators say the girl had a large bruise on her forehead and injuries on other parts of her body. The girl was taken to a Bangor hospital. Investigators determined the girl’s injuries were consistent with abuse. Swanson was held at the Somerset County Jail.
Park to Open
(Milbridge) The community will welcome the new Milbridge Commons with a celebration this Saturday from 11 ‘til 2. Festivities will include kids activities, a potluck picnic, hot dogs, and side dishes from local restaurants. Local musicians will perform and folks are encouraged to bring their own instruments for an impromptu jam session. The wellness-park and garden is located on Main Street across from the Milbridge Historical Society building.
Rabies Clinic
(Belfast) The Waldo County Humane Society is offering a couple of upcoming rabies clinics. Rabies shots are free to pet owners who live in Waldo County. Pets from other counties are welcome for a fee of $7. Animals should be on leashes or secured in portable pet carriers. This week’s rabies clinic is Saturday from 9 to 11AM at the Brooks Fire Station. Next month’s rabies clinic is at the Searsmont town office on November 10th.
