Newport Standoff
(Newport) – State police and sheriff’s deputies forced open a door at a Newport motel yesterday and tackled a man who threatened them with a sword leading to a several hour standoff. WABI-TV reports 60-year old Louis Ireland was highly intoxicated. The incident began when Ireland allegedly threatened a maid at Pray’s Motel and then threatened to stab the motel owner. When deputies and state troopers arrived, Ireland allegedly threatened them with a sword. He faces numerous charges.
Ambulance – Ellsworth
(Ellsworth) – City officials in Ellsworth will again discuss housing a pair of ambulances at the fire station. Capital Ambulance is now serving the city but lost coverage as a few communities have not signed contracts with them. Ellsworth officials have offered up space in the fire station at city hall to park two rigs and provide sleeping and office quarters for paramedics. The city council will discuss the idea again Monday night.
Body Found-Not Suspicious
(Islesford) – Authorities say a man’s death on Islesford this week is not suspicious, but the medical examiner’s office is exploring what caused it. Deputies, Game Wardens and Marine Patrol officers responded to the island this week to search for the 50-year old man whose name they did not release. The fire department and local residents helped search and they found his body in a wooded area on Islesford.
Fishman Stalker
(Belfast) The trial resumed this week for a chimney sweep accused of stalking and harassing a famous musician from Lincolnville. 63-year-old Bradley Williams is charged with 2 counts each of stalking and harassment against Jonathan Fishman who’s the drummer for the band Phish and also a Lincolnville selectman. For more than a decade Williams has allegedly contacted the Fishman family, threatened to take their kids away from them, and sent them gifts. WVII-TV reports Williams took the stand in his own defense Wednesday. The jury is expected to get the case today (10/12). Fishman also has a defamation case pending against Williams.
Team Hope Walk-Huntington’s Disease
(Ellsworth) Team Hope Walks are happening nationwide this month to raise money and awareness in the fight to cure Huntington’s Disease. The local Team Hope Walk is this Sunday at Ellsworth High School. MDI Bio Lab assistant professor Dr Aric Rogers explains that Huntington’s Disease is an age-related genetic disorder. The Team Hope Walk is rain or shine this Sunday morning at 9:30 on the paved trail at Ellsworth High School.
Cruise Ship Season
(Bar Harbor) Dreary weather is blamed for deterring 2 out of 3 cruise ships from docking in Bar Harbor yesterday. About 31 more ships are scheduled to arrive between now and the last day of the season November 7th. Harbor master Charlie Phippen tells Star 97-7 the schedule for next year is already drafted and will be available soon.
Peninsula Harvest Fest
(Blue Hill) The 4th annual Peninsula Harvest Fest returns to Mainescape in Blue Hill tomorrow. Blue Hill Heritage Trust outreach director Chrissy Allen says the event features local vendors selling food, beer, coffee and more, live music, crafts, and activities. Allen notes that Harvest Fest is also the kick-off to the Winter Market.
SWFD Open House
(SW Harbor) The Southwest Harbor Fire Department’s Open House is tomorrow from 10 ‘til 2 with refreshments. Residents are invited to come meet the firefighters, check out all the trucks and try on gear. The firefighters will demonstrate how the trucks and equipment work.
Pet Food Drive
(Bangor) The Eastern Area Agency On Aging’s “Furry Friends Food Drive” is tomorrow. The Bangor Police Department is helping to collect pet supplies at Shaw’s on Main Street from 9 ‘til 2. The Furry Friends Food Bank helps seniors and adults with disabilities feed their pets. Donations of any pet item are welcome. They’re hoping to collect wet and dry dog and cat food, kitty litter, toys, and treats.
Electronic Court Filing System
(Augusta) Traffic ticket violations will soon be available online in Maine as part of the first phase of a new $15 million electronic court filing system. The Bangor Daily News reports beginning October 29th people can use the system – named Odyssey – to pay their tickets, contest a ticket or postpone a court date. People can also upload documents such as insurance certificates and vehicle registrations. The completed court filing system will be available statewide by December 2021.
