Skydiver missing
(Lebanon) – A skydiving instructor tandem jumping with a student somehow became detached from the student and the parachute and fell to the ground in Western Maine. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland tells Star 97.7 state troopers, game wardens, and forest rangers were search for the instructor yesterday. The student landed safely and alerted authorities to the incident near Lebanon. The instructor worked for Skydive New England.
EMMC Camera
(Bangor) – Eastern Maine Health Care has suspended an employee after discovering a video camera inside a staff bathroom. A spokeswoman says they don’t believe that anyone was recorded in the bathroom. The hospital is not identifying the employee and didn’t say how they discovered the camera. Bangor police are also investigating.
Hotel Auction
(Belfast) – A Belfast motel that went up for auction this week had no takers. Village Soup dot-com reports the Admiral’s Ocean Inn drew no bidders on Wednesday. The owner who is a Massachusetts car dealer says the motel needs an owner who can take care of the building. The City of Belfast once housed General Assistance recipients in the facility but has stopped using the motel because of concerns about upkeep.
Fugitive Found
(Hawaii) Hawaiian police have returned a Hancock County man who had eluded Maine police for 5 years. 38-year old Joey Ouellette of Sedgwick now sits in the Hancock County jail. The Bangor Daily News reports in September 2013 police pulled over Ouellette for allegedly driving 127 miles per hour on his motorcycle. Ouellette allegedly grabbed Sgt Alden Bustard’s pepper spray and sprayed the trooper in the face then fled. State police got a recent tip that Ouellette was in Hawaii and local police there arrested him. Sgt Bustard was one of the troopers who traveled to Hawaii to pick up Ouellette and fly with him back to Maine. Ouellette is due in court November 7th.
Shooter Sentenced
(Bangor) – A judge has sentenced a Connecticut man who shot another man to death in Bangor on Easter Sunday 2017 to 18-years in prison. Antoinne “Prince” Bethea claimed he shot 44-year old Terrance Durel in self defense. Durel was Bethea’s girlfriend’s estranged husband. Bethea asked the judge to keep the sentence as short as possible so he could help raise his six children.
Fire Investigation
(Old Town) – State fire investigators have confirmed a criminal investigation into a fatal fire nearly 2-years ago continues. WABI-TV requested documents in connection with the fire in Old Town in which Maiysha Somers-Jones and her two children perished. The fire marshal’s office said the documents remain sealed because of the investigation. Her boyfriend told investigators he’d been out for a walk when the fire broke out. Authorities have not charged anyone and they’ve not said how the fire started.
Wastewater Discharge Permit
(Belfast) Nordic Aquafarms will hold a public informational meeting next week to discuss environmental impacts of the land-based salmon farm’s wastewater discharge. The Ellsworth American reports the yet-to-be-built land-based salmon farm mailed notices to abutters of the proposed project in Belfast. The company intends to file an application next month for a wastewater discharge permit with the DEP, which is a federal requirement. The public meeting is next Thursday night at 6 at the Troy Howard Middle School. The Nordic Aquafarms facility will be built in 2 phases over the next 6 or 7 years.
Motel Drug Arrest
(Kennebunk) Police arrested a New York man who allegedly stashed over 7-grams of heroin and nearly $2-thousand-dollars cash in his underwear. Drug agents arrested 31-year-old Reginald Lewis from the Bronx at a Kennebunk motel Wednesday night. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency watched Lewis for months and drug agents allegedly made undercover purchases during that time. During the bust agents also confiscated 26 grams of crack cocaine at the motel.
