Harrington Drug Plea
(Bangor) – A 31-year old Harrington man faces up to 20-years in prison and a million dollar fine for selling heroin and crack. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that Owen Fickett entered a guilty plea to drug dealing. In March a state trooper pulled Fickett over and discovered the drugs and $12-hundred dollars in cash. A federal judge will sentence Fickett at a later date.
Sex Offender Sentence
(Bangor) – A convicted sex offender from Garland will spend a year and a half in prison. Federal judge John Levy sentenced 66-year old Roger Pickard yesterday. Picard pled guilty in May to failing to register as a sex offender. Picard moved to Maine from Hawaii in 2016. He was convicted in 1983 in Massachusetts and registered in Hawaii. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that Picard knew he was supposed to register when he moved to Maine.
Filer Suit Settled
(Ellsworth) – A former Hancock County man has settled a lawsuit that he filed against more than a dozen defendants. WABI-TV reports Vladek Filer was accused of sexually assaulting his wife – a charge that an appeals court threw out. Filer sued local police and prosecutors and witnesses against him and settled for $375-thousand dollars. Only one of the defendants has not reached a settlement in the case; a friend of Filer’s former wife.
Scarecrow Contest
(Blue Hill) The 4th annual Peninsula Harvest Fest returns to Mainescape in Blue Hill next month. Blue Hill Heritage Trust outreach director Chrissy Allen says anyone participating in the scarecrow decorating contest should start working on their piece and can bring it to Mainescape anytime before October 13th. Peninsula Harvest Fest is put on by the Blue Hill Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, Mainescape, and Blue Hill Heritage Trust.
Preparedness
(Augusta) It’s the final week of National Preparedness Month. Maine Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Susan Faloon says during week 4 Mainers are encouraged to make a financial plan.
Autumn Gold Winners
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth Chamber kicked off the beginning of fall with their annual Autumn Gold weekend. In the decorating contest the public’s pick for storefront display went to Hancock County Technical Center. The window display vote went to Sugar Mags on Main Street. The winner of the Noontime rotary club of Ellsworth’s Rubber Ducky Race was Richard McMullen. The big winner’s at Chowder Fest were Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and the Union River Lobster Pot. And the jumbo jackpot winner’s name pulled at Noon today was Harlee Webber of Sullivan.
Dog Killer-Court
(Ellsworth) – A Steuben man in jail for violating release conditions might stay there for a while as he awaits prosecution for allegedly killing a dog in a highly publicized case. 22-year old Justin Chipman will appear in court today for violating release conditions when he and another man allegedly killed Franky the Pug in August. The other man, 37-year old Nathan Burke of Hancock is out on bail. Chipman was previously held on a terrorizing charge. The DA’s office has subpoenaed Burke to testify against Chipman.
Burglary Arrest
(Bangor) Bangor police quickly apprehended a man shortly after he allegedly robbed a business. Police were called to a restaurant on Ohio Street yesterday morning where the owner discovered a man inside destroying property. The owner called 9-1-1 and confronted the suspect who then fled on foot. Surveillance video helped officers identify the burglar as 24-year-old Joseph Landry-Nelson of Kenduskeag. He was found a short time later walking nearby and was arrested. Landry-Nelson is charged with Burglary, Theft, Criminal Mischief and Drug Possession.
Vicki Secret Settlement
(Bangor) A Bradley woman has won a settlement from Victoria’s Secret in the Bangor Mall after filing a lawsuit claiming the lingerie retailer fired her for not fitting the company’s image. The company fired 51-year-old Kelly Merchant as manager in June 2015. The Bangor Daily News reports the company claimed Merchant was fired for stealing. Merchant’s lawyer stated his client used a coupon for a purchase against company policy and argued that Merchant was fired for non-compliance with the company’s stereotype of what an attractive woman should look like. Merchant settled in court last week for an undisclosed amount.
False Statements
(Bangor) A Winthrop man faces up to 10-years in prison for making false statements while purchasing guns. 35-year-old Donald Henderson pleaded guilty Monday in US District court for the 2017 incidents. Court records say when Henderson purchased guns from a Kennebec County firearms dealer he falsely claimed the guns were for him and that he was not an unlawful user of controlled statements. When he’s sentenced later Henderson may also have to pay a quarter million dollar fine.
Priest – Prison
(Portland) – A former Roman Catholic priest who sexually abused a 9-year-old boy at a Maine church in the 1990s is going back to prison. James Talbot pleaded guilty Monday to gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact under a plea agreement in which he will serve three years in prison.
Mom Summoned
EASTON, Mass. (AP) – Police in Massachusetts have charged a Maine woman whose 17-month old child was found alone in a shopping cart outside a Target store. Easton police said Monday the 27-year-old Acton, Maine, woman will be summoned to court to face a charge of abandonment or endangerment of a child charge. Officers responded to the Easton store at about 1 p.m. Saturday for reports of an unattended toddler. About an hour later, a man called to say the child had accidentally been left behind.
