Illegals Sentenced
(Bangor) – A federal judge sentenced an Australian woman and a man from Mexico who snuck into the US through Calais to time served in jail. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 that Sarah Branch of Australia dropped off her boyfriend Benigno Godinez-Cortez of Mexico near a railroad trestle on the Canadian Border north of Calais. She went through customs where agents found paperwork from the boyfriend. Branch admitted to the plan to call him on a cell phone after she got onto the US side of the border and pick him up near the bridge. The US had deported Cortez in 1994.
Medway Shooting
(Medway) – Authorities say there is no threat to the public following a shooting early Sunday in Medway. WABI-TV reports one person went to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. Police have not released the 43-year old man’s name or condition, the Lifeflight helicopter flew him to the hospital.
Prospect Trailer Fire
(Prospect) – The fire marshal’s office will look for the cause of a fire that damaged a mobile home in Prospect. WABI-TV reports the homeowner returned from work yesterday morning and found smoke coming from the trailer on Clark Road. No one was inside, and no injuries are reported.
Porch Fire
(Rockland) – A tenant in a Rockland apartment house is credited with saving the building from a fire that started on a 2nd story deck. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the tenant called 9-1-1, evacuated the building, then threw water on the fire until the fire department arrived. Firefighters quickly got the blaze on Summer Street out. A discarded cigarette is blamed for stating the fire.
Aging & Loss Workshop
(Ellsworth) Pre-registration is underway for Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County’s “Aging and Loss Workshop”. Spokeswoman Janice Ronco says it’s intended for individuals 62 or older who have experienced any of the many losses associated with aging. The free Aging and Loss Workshop is Monday mornings beginning October 15th through November 19th at the Friends in Action Senior Center in Ellsworth. Pre-register by contacting Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County by October 8th.
Ticonic 4 Firehouse
(Ellsworth Falls) Neighbors are trying to stop the demolition of the former fire house and community center in Ellsworth Falls. Webber Group bought the buildings in 2005 and recently obtained permits to knock down the structures. Neighboring property owner Judy Blood tells Star 97-7 she’s gathered support to preserve the buildings. Blood says she has over 400 online petition signatures and additional hand-written signatures opposing the demolition. Webber has halted demolition plans until the city’s appeals board reviews the matter on October 22nd.
Pet Fair
(Ellsworth) The Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth will be the site of the SPCA of Hancock County’s 10th annual Pet Fair. The big draw to the pet fair is the Pet Parade where leashed dogs and their owners can participate for a blue ribbon. The pet fair includes food, crafts and games. It’s this Saturday from 11 to 3, rain or shine.
Drug Bust – 5 Arrests
(Detroit) Police arrested five people on drug charges in Somerset County after a Thursday morning raid in Detroit. Deputies searched a home on North Road and seized crack cocaine, heroin, Oxycodone pills, and other evidence. Agents charged 30-year-old Tabatha Lombard, 34-year-old Lucus Judkins, 21-year-old Chelsea Clements and 2 New York men with trafficking and possession.
Child Support Payments
(Bangor) A North Carolina man faces up to 2-years in prison after a Bangor jury found him guilty of failing to pay 20-years worth of child support. Evidence at the trial this week showed that in 1997 Steve Matisko was found to be the legal and biological father of a child. Matisko was then ordered to pay $56 per week in child support for the next 20-years, but he did not. When he sentenced later Matisko may also have to pay a quarter-million-dollar fine and more than $58-thousand-dollars in restitution.
Fire Injury
(Lewiston) The State Fire Marshal’s Office says a Lewiston woman was seriously injured Thursday while smoking on oxygen inside her apartment. 74-year-old Rosalie Coulombe suffered smoke inhalation and internal injuries, and was being treated at CMMC in Lewiston. Firefighters found her unresponsive in her bathroom after they entered the apartment.
Bus Driver Fired
(New Gloucester) A Maine school district has fired a bus driver caught on surveillance video smacking a teenager who has autism. The boy’s mother Melissa Seavey tells WMTW that her son likes to spin things as a coping mechanism, and that driver was apparently angered when he didn’t heed his warning to buckle up. The Gray school superintendent promptly fired the driver, who’s charged with assault and is due in court next month.
Nat’l Recovery Month
(Ellsworth) September is Recovery Month, an effort by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to increase awareness about mental and substance use disorder. In honor of this, Healthy Acadia hosts a Potluck Dinner and Discussion featuring guest speakers from James’ Place who will share their experiences with developing recovery housing in Augusta. That’s tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 at Your Place Inc on Old Mill Road in Ellsworth.
