Eddington Death
(Eddington) – Police say an Eddington man’s death is under investigation after finding his body in a truck that veered off the road. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department tells Star 97.7 that 86-year old Donald Voteur was dead at the scene off Route 178 in Eddington. Voteur was the truck’s operator. The medical examiner’s office is trying to determine how Voteur died.
Pot Crop Shots
(Milford) – Deputies in Penobscot County say a Milford man claimed he was shooting at intruders trying to steal his marijuana plants. Neighbors called 9-1-1 after hearing gunshots Wednesday night at about the same time the shooter called to report the alleged theft attempts. Police didn’t find anyone when they got on scene. No reports have come in about people with gunshot wounds.
Park – Congress
(Acadia National Park) – Senator Angus King and Congressman Bruce Poliquin toured facilities at Acadia National Park yesterday as lawmakers consider a bill to increase funding for the park service to repair crumbling buildings and roads. King said he’s optimistic that Congress will pass a 6-and-a-half billion dollar bill to help get rid of the maintenance backlog. Deferred maintenance projects have put the entire national park system about 11-point-6 billion dollars behind on work.
Autumn Gold Weekend
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth will be abuzz tomorrow during the busiest day of Autumn Gold weekend. Ellsworth Chamber executive director Gretchen Wilson says visitors can park to catch free transportation around town. Tonight’s big Autumn Gold event is the Beer and Wine Tasting from 5 ‘til 8, and WVII-TV will be there doing their entire newscast live from Harbor Park.
Road Race
(Ellsworth) Before you gobble up samples at Autumn Gold Chowder Fest you can start your day on the right foot with the Downeast Family YMCA’s “Roger Willey Road Race”. Walk for Recover Postponed
(Machias) In honor of National Recovery Month, Healthy Acadia and the Washington County Community Action Team are hosting the Walk for Recovery and Candlelight Vigil. The event aims to support community members in recovery and their families. Folks are invited share their stories of recovery or bring photos of loved ones who lost their battle with addiction. The date has changed due to the forecast. Line-up for the walk and candlelight vigil is at 5:45 tomorrow evening, still at the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.
Captain Sentenced Later
(Cushing) A lobster boat captain charged in the death of two crew members is expected to plead guilty later this month. 30-year-old Christopher Hutchinson of Cushing was skipper of the boat in 2014 when it flipped in heavy waves, killing Tomas Hammond and Tyler Sawyer. Prosecutors said Hutchinson used alcohol and drugs before the mishap. Hutchinson faces 4-years in jail when he’s sentenced later.
Fatal Lawnmower Crash
(Unity) – A 66-year old man is dead, his granddaughter hurt after a car slammed into the lawnmower they were on crossing the road in Unity. The Waldo County Sheriff’s office reports Clement Blakney died yesterday morning. The 5-year old girl is expected to survive. Police are still working to determine what caused the crash on Routes 9 and 202 in Unity Wednesday afternoon.
Fishing Shack Squatter
(Acadia Nat’l Park) Mt. Desert’s Code Enforcement officer has ordered The Otter Creek Aid Society to secure a small fishing shack on Otter Cove after she found evidence of a squatter. The Mt Desert Islander reports the 22-by-22-foot fish shack on the western shore of Otter Cove sits on small piece of land surrounded by Acadia National Park property. The shack has no plumbing, water, sewer or subsurface wastewater system. Aid Society President John Macauley tells the newspaper he’s taking steps to secure the fish shack to prevent anyone from living there.
Blue Hill YMCA
(Blue Hill) Blue Hill is getting a $3-point-5-million-dollar community center. The Downeast Family YMCA will operate the new 13-thousand-square foot building to be located on 2 acres of wetlands adjacent to the old YMCA on South Street. The Bangor Daily News reports Tradewinds Marketplace owners Chuck and Belinda Lawrence formed the non-profit Lawrence Family Foundation to oversee the construction of the new building. Construction will begin in October with a completion goal of next fall.
Fatal Fire Sentence
(Corinth) A Corinth man who set his home on fire attempting to kill his domestic partner is committed to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services until further notice. The Bangor Daily News reports 65-year-old Fred Roberts was found not guilty by reason of insanity Wednesday to attempted murder and arson. A doctor who testified says Roberts exhibited bizarre behavior in the weeks after being kicked in the head by a cow then later striking his head when he fell on ice. The January 24th fire forced 70-year-old Barbara King to jump from a second story window. She died at the hospital of her injuries.

(Lamoine) – Power company crews are gearing up for a windy day and night. Emera Maine spokeswoman Judy Long tells Star 97.7 that they’ve put their storm team in place with additional line crews on standby. The approaching windy weather is expected to bring down leaf laden limbs. Long reminds motorists to give line crews plenty of room on the road and to stay away from downed lines.
