Pellet Mill Fire
(Corinth) – More than two dozen fire departments rushed to Corinth after a wood pellet making mill caught fire last evening. The 9-1-1 call about the Corinth Wood Pellets plant came in around 6:30 last night. WABI-TV reports the fire chief from Corinth ended up going to the hospital, but no other injuries are reported. Witnesses said flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived. No word yet on a cause, but the fire marshal’s office will likely investigate.
Greeley Plea
(Machias) – A New York City woman accused of helping to murder a traveling nurse whose body turned up alongside a Cherryfield road last summer will remain in prison but entered guilty pleas to other crimes yesterday. 20-year old Quaneeshya Greeley will testify against another New Yorker who likely caused Sally Shaw’s death. Carine Reeves will go on trial later. Greeley was in court yesterday, pleading guilty to drug conspiracy and hindering apprehension charges. She, Reeves and Shaw were allegedly involved in a drug selling operation and some sort of love triangle was also alleged.
Gang Member Sentenced
(Bangor) – A Connecticut gang enforcer involved in the drug trade between New Haven and the Bangor area will spend 18-years in federal prison. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 that Luis Padilla plead guilty to numerous gang related crimes including murder and drug dealing. The 25-year old was sentenced in Connecticut yesterday.
Recycling
(Ellsworth) – Ellsworth has become the latest Downeast Community to look at reducing the amount of materials getting recycled. Markets for recycling have dried up, and there is little to revenue coming into municipalities for recyclable materials. The Ellsworth American reports some city councilors favor sending burnable trash to an incinerator for conversion to electricity instead. Several communities including Gouldsboro and Milbridge had either stopped or cut back on recycling programs because of the high cost.
Sex Assault Plea
(Machias) – A 50-year old Milbridge man faces jail time after he pled guilty to three counts of assault. WABI-TV reports Eric Moores entered the pleas this week in Washington County. He was originally indicted for unlawful sexual contact. His attorney says Moores is an alcoholic. Moores must stay drug and alcohol free and will likely be sentenced in about a year.
Art with Seeds
(Blue Hill) An art workshop in Blue Hill will teach participants to create natural sculptures for wintering birds. Blue Hill Heritage Trust outreach director Chrissy Allen says it’s the Open Air Arts Initiative’s third workshop. The workshop is at the Kingdom Woods Blueberry Field this Saturday from 10 ‘til Noon. Materials are included.
EAS & WEA Tests POSTPONED
(National) The emergency alert system test and the wireless emergency alert test scheduled for this afternoon have been postponed. Maine Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Susan Faloon tells Star 97.7 FEMA and the FCC made that decision. Faloon says although this is a Presidential level alert test, it’s unlikely that President Trump is actually the one who’s pushing the button that day. Faloon notes that older cell phones may not receive the message on October 3rd and not all wireless carriers are participating.
Disorderly Conduct Arrests
(Bangor) Bangor police are stepping up their presence at Pickering Square after two arrests there Tuesday afternoon. While officers were trying to arrest an unnamed person, several people interfered including 22-year-old Bret Libby and 23-year-old Mariah Lamb. When the group became aggressive, officers called for back-up and warned Lamb to step aside. Police say she ignored orders and as police took her into custody Libby tried blocking officers. He allegedly punched an officer in the head and face several times. Lamb is charged with Disorderly Conduct and Refusing to Submit to Arrest. Libby faces those charges and more.
EMS Workshops
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth city officials gave the green-light to conduct public workshops to discuss the future of emergency medical services. The idea was brought up during Monday night’s city council meeting as a result of the city’s former EMS provider County Ambulance shut down a few weeks ago. Capital Ambulance is serving Ellsworth currently. Workshop dates and times have not been announced.
DOL Assistance
(E. Machias) The Department of Labor is offering assistance to employees of an East Machias restaurant that burned down last week. Stone Soup Café and Market was destroyed by fire early in the morning on September 10th. WABI-TV reports the Maine Department of Labor is holding a session at the Machias Career Center this morning (9/20) at 9 to inform workers of their options for health insurance and give them advice on finding new employment.
Lobsters Smoking Weed
(Southwest Harbor) A lobster pound in Southwest Harbor wants to use marijuana to cook lobsters more humanely. The owner of Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound is also a registered medical marijuana caregiver. The owner tells WMTW-TV she put a test lobster in a box with a few inches of water then blew marijuana smoke into the box. She says the animal was calmer, and she plans to use the new method at customers’ requests.
PUC – CMP & Emera
(Augusta) The Maine Public Utilities Commission has concluded two Maine utilities responded “reasonably” in taking precautions according to best available weather forecasts against an intense 2017 storm that led to record blackouts. The decision, which came in a unanimous vote Tuesday by the three commissioners, ends an investigation against Central Maine Power Company and Emera Maine.
Ellsworth Politics
(Ellsworth) – There will be some new faces on the Ellsworth City Council come November. Long time councilors Bob Crosthwaite and Steve Beatham do not plan to run for re-election. Former council chair John Phillips has taken out nomination papers as have Gene Lyons and David Burks. The deadline to get papers into the city clerk’s office for inclusion on the ballot is tomorrow. The city election will coincide with the state elections on November 6th.
