SW Harbor Parking
(Southwest Harbor) – Selectmen in Southwest Harbor have turned down proposals to lease or buy a 38-space parking lot. The area around the town’s post office is privately owned, but until this summer, the Town of Southwest Harbor had leased it for a dollar a year, plus a tax abatement for the property owner. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Selectmen rejected an offer to lease the space for $18-thousand dollars a year plus $12-thousand a year in maintenance. Previous purchase offers have ranged between a half million and $800-thousand dollars.
Former Teacher Charged Again
(Deer Isle) – A former teacher at the Deer Isle/Stonington Middle School faces more sex charges. The Island Advantages reports Izaac Bolduc has a court date next month after authorities charged him with unlawful sexual touching. The school department fired Bolduc in May after he was accused of inappropriately touching a student. The District Attorney’s Office reports the new charges involve a different student. Bolduc taught phys ed at the middle and high schools.
Orrington Town Manager Resigns
(Orrington) – Orrington’s long time town manager has submitted his resignation after a dispute with the town’s Board of Selectmen. WABI-TV reports Paul White stepped down at last night’s meeting. He had submitted his resignation earlier this month, intending to stay on until the end of next week, but stepped down immediately at last night’s meeting. Selectboard chair Keith Bowden said the two had clashed over things like developing land and live streaming meetings.
Dedham Bike Chase Arrest
(Dedham) – Police have arrested a man who led officers on a high speed chase in Dedham last weekend. WVII-TV reports 38-year old Rodney Leech allegedly fled when officers tried to stop him Friday night. He crashed his motorcycle on the Green Lake Road in Dedham and then fled on foot. Police located Leech in the wee hours of Saturday morning and charged him with eluding, criminal speed and other crimes.
Senior SNAP
(Maine) Maine has more older residents than any other New England state, and has the highest level of food insecurity in this part of the country among people age 60 and over. More than 100-thousand Maine seniors face hunger as a daily concern. About 70-percent of older Mainers who qualify for SNAP benefits don’t receive them. A-A-R-P Maine spokeswoman Jane Margesson says many factors contribute to why those folks aren’t enrolled. Last week, the U-S Senate passed a Farm Bill that protects the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for five more years. It is expected to move to a conference committee this week, and then to the president’s desk before the program expires at the end of September.
Knowlton Park Assault
(Ellsworth) Video surveillance helped Ellsworth police identify an alleged suspect in an assault at Knowlton Park. The Ellsworth American reports 28-year-old transient Kelby Bullock is charged with robbery, assault and criminal threatening for allegedly beating up another man in the men’s bathroom and stealing his cash Saturday evening. The victim was treated at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. Sunday police pulled over Bullock as he drove north on Route 1A in Holden. His court date is September 18th.
Speed Enforcement Detail
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth police department handed out 65 citations during a speed enforcement detail on Route 1-A Friday. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department assisted in pulling over drivers exceeding the 55-mile an hour speed zone by at least 15 miles per hour over the limit. Ellsworth police chief Glenn Moshier says the fastest speed recorded was 102 – that driver was cited for criminal speed. The Bureau of Highway Safety paid for the speed detail.
Stabbing Arrest
(Bangor) Police arrested a 29-year old man from Albany New York in connection with a fight along the Bangor waterfront this weekend. Jacob Walsh is charged with Aggravated Assault. The Police Department reports to Star 97.7 that the fight involved 3 men, and another one of the participants broke an arm during the altercation. All three went to the hospital for evaluations.
Orneville Fatal
(Orneville) An accident in Piscataquis County Sunday evening has left one person dead. WABI-TV reports the crash on Lyford Road in Orneville occurred before 7 when a vehicle driven by 31-year-old Eric Bubar of Orneville drifted onto the shoulder. Investigators say Bubar overcorrected, causing the car to rollover and crash into trees.
Dishonest Cop
(Rockland) A judge is raising concerns about a “dishonest officer” and is asking the Knox County district attorney to review past convictions involving the officer. Justice Daniel Billings shared his concerns last month when he let a man withdraw his guilty plea from a 2013 drunken driving case. Former officer Jacob Shirey resigned from the Rockland Police Department in early 2017 amid an internal affairs investigation into allegations of misconduct and dishonesty.
Dead Whale
(Old Orchard Beach) Scientists are investigating the death of a 24-foot Minke whale that washed ashore in Old Orchard Beach. Marine Mammals of Maine Director Lynda Doughty tells WGME-TV the dead whale that was found Sunday morning had previously been spotted floating in Casco Bay. Doughty says there’s no obvious cause of death, but that samples were collected from the whale.
